뉴욕공립도서관 3월 여성역사의 달 추천도서 31

뉴욕공립도서관(New York Public Library)가 3월 여성역사의 달(Women's History Month)를 맞아 한인 작가 이민진씨의 소설 '파친코', 캐시 박 홍의 수필집 '마이너 필링스', 수잔 최의 소설 '신뢰 연습'과 미셸 오바마의 회고록 '비커밍'을 비롯 31권을 추천했다. 

시인 캐시 박 홍(Cathy Park Hong)의 자전적 에세이집 '마이너 필링스: 이 감정들은 사소하지 않다(Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning)'는 미국에서 아시안아메리칸으로 살아가면서 자신의 정체성과 부모세대의 트라우마 등을 다루었다. 2021 퓰리처상 넌픽션 최종 후보에 올랐으며, 전미도서비평가협회상 자서전 부문상을 수상했다. 

이민진(Min Jin Lee)씨의 '파친코(Pachinko)'는 "역사가 우리를 망쳐 놨지만 그래도 상관없다."로 시작한다. 소설은 부산 영도에서 시작, 오사카를 거쳐 미국에 정착한 4대 가문의 이야기를 담았다. 파친코 사업을 하는 재일교포(자이니치)들의 삶을 통해 역사의 뒤안길에서 억압당한 한인들의 인내를 보여준다. 2017 전미도서상 최종 후보에 올랐다. 

2019 전미도서상(National Book Awards) 수상작인 수잔 최(Susan Choi)의 '신뢰 연습(Trust Excercise)'는 텍사스의 한 예술고등학교 연기교사의 수업을 통해 섹스와 권력, 신뢰의 의미를 묻는 작품이다.  이 세권은 한국어 번역판이 나와있다.
