3대손 화가 제이미 와이어스의 작품세계

 

 

'크리스티나의 세계(Christina's World, 1948)'로 유명한 리얼리스트 화가 앤드류 와이어스(Andrew Wyeth, 1917-2009)의 아버지 N. C. 와이어스(1882-1945)는 아동도서 일러스트레이터, 아들 제이미 와이어스(Jamie Wyeth, 1946- )도 화가다. 3대 화가 제이미 와이어스의 작품세계를 탐구한 'JAMIE WYETH: UNSETTLED'이 올 3월 리쫄리 엘렉타에서 출간됐다. 

 

이 책은 펜실베이니아와 델라웨어의 브랜디와인강 계곡과 메인의 중부 해안 사이에서 시간을 쪼개 살았던 제이미 와이어스가 집착했던 불안한 주제를 다룬다. 폭력성이 잠재한 농기구, 기이한 초상화와 불안한 인물 연구, 유령이 나오는 장소, 식물과 동물에 사로잡혔던 제이미 와이어스의 작품들을 분석한다. 

 

펜실베니아주 채즈포드에서 태어나 공립학교 6년 중퇴 후 할아버지 스튜디오에서 고모 캐롤린 와이어스를 사사하는 홈스쿨링으로 미술 교육에 집중했다. 캐롤린의 영향으로 닭, 개, 돼지, 말 등 가축 그림 그리는 것을 즐겼다. 1970년대엔 줄무늬 효과를 살릴 수 있는 카드보드(골판지)에 그림을 그렸으며, 존 F. 케네디, 지미 카터 대통령을 비롯, 앤디 워홀, 루돌프 누레예프, 아놀드 슈왈제네거의 초상화도 맡았다.
