Tina Kim Gallery is delighted to announce The Making of Modern Korean Art: The Letters of Kim Tschang-Yeul, Kim Whanki, Lee Ufan, and Park Seo-Bo, 1961–1982, opening May 5, 2025.

 

Organized in conjunction with a landmark new publication of the same title, the exhibition brings to life the personal and intellectual exchanges between four pioneering artists who helped shape the trajectory of modern Korean art.

 

Ranging from personal reflections to critical dialogues on the future of Korean art, the letters reveal a shared vision and an unwavering commitment to championing one another on the global stage. The exhibition will feature major works alongside a selection of original letters, archival materials, and ephemera, tracing the evolution of their artistic styles and signature series during the years of their correspondence.

We also invite you to a special panel discussion at the Asia Society on Friday, May 9, where Yasufumi Nakamori, Director of the Asia Society Museum, will moderate a panel discussion between the book's contributors—Doryun Chung (M+ Hong Kong), Yeon Shim Chung (Hongik University, Seoul) and Kyung An (The Guggenheim)—and honored guest Lee Ufan.

33 Keys to Decoding the Korean Wave #29 K-Art: The Revival of the Korean Monochrome Painting  

In the 2010s, the global art community experienced a renaissance in Korean monochrome abstraction known as 'Dansaekhwa.' Monochromatic painters, who emerged during Korea's era of dictatorship in the 1970s, now find themselves in their prime during the twilight of their careers. I explored the history of Dansaekhwa and the masters such as the late Yun Hyong-keun, late Chung Chang-sup, late Park Seo-Bo and Chung Sang-Hwa, Ha Chong Hyun. Special exhibitions of Korean art are continuing at major art museums in the United States such as the Metropolitan Museum, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum. Furthermore, Seoul has now emerged as a global art mecca.
