Taking the viewer on a memorable neo-noir trip through Hollywood’s dark underbelly, Lynch dispenses with a conventional narrative in favour of a hallucinogenic assault on the senses that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

Henry (John Nance) resides alone in a bleak apartment surrounded by industrial gloom. When he discovers that an earlier fling with Mary X (Charlotte Stewart) left her pregnant, he marries the expectant mother and has her move in with him. Things take a decidedly strange turn when the couple's baby turns out to be a bizarre lizard-like creature that won't stop wailing. Other characters, including a disfigured lady who lives inside a radiator, inhabit the building and add to Henry's troubles.

David Lynch (1946-2025)

 

'블루 벨벳' '트윈 픽스' '와일드 엣 하트' '스트레이트 스토리'의 데이빗 린치(David Lynch) 감독이 1월 15일 세상을 떠났다. 그는 흡연으로 만성 폐질환인 폐기종 진단을 받았었고, 이달 초 캘리포니아에서 발생한 산불로 인해 집에서 대피한 후 숨을 거두었다.

린치는 화가이자, 사진작가, 뮤지션이자 감독이자 커피광이었다. 린치는 2006년 베니스 영화제에서 평생 공로상, 2019년 아카데미 명예상을 수상했다.

데이빗 린치: 영화감독, 화가, 사진작가, 커피광...

 

영화감독 데이빗 린치가 2022년 디지털 누드 화보집 'David Lynch: Digital Nude, The Fondation Cartier)'를 출간했다. 화가로서 전시를 열어온 데이빗 린치는 이번엔 디지털 카메라를 들고, 육체를 탐구한다. 팔, 다리, 부드러운 피부를 추상적인 이미지로 승화한 작품들이다. 육체의 관능성과 디지털 기술, 그리고 린치의 초현실적인 감각이 만난 이미지들이다. 

 

1946년 몬타나주 미술라에서 태어난 데이빗 린치는 필라델피아의 펜실베이니아아카데미오브파인아트(PAFA)에서 미술을 전공하면서 단편영화를 만들다가 할리우드로 갔다. 화가로서 린치는 회화, 조각, 종이작품과 사진작업 등 다양한 매체로 작업해왔다. 1989년 소호 레오카스텔리 갤러리(Leo Castelli Gallry) 첫 뉴욕 전시를 열었으며, 이후 프랑스, 독일, 스페인, 덴마크, 러시아, 일본 등지에서 전시회를 열어왔다. 2006년 파리 카르티에재단, 2009년 독일의 막스 에른스트 뮤지엄, 2014년엔 모교인 PAFA에서 회고전 'David Lynch: The Unified Field'를 열었다.

 

데이빗 린치는 '이레이저 헤드(Eraserhead) '엘리펀트 맨(The Elephant Man)' '블루 벨벳(Blue Velvet)' '트윈 픽스(Twin Peaks)' '와일드 엣 하트(Wild at Heart)' '스트레이트 스토리(Straight Story)' '멀홀랜드 드라이브(Mullholland Drive)' 등 사회의 아웃사이더들의 절망와 열정을 그려왔다. 

 

데이빗 린치가 존경하는 화가는 르네 마거리트. 린치는 1973년부터 명상으로 세계 평화를 이끌 수 있다고 주장해왔으며, 열렬한 커피광으로 자신의 블렌드 알레그로 커피(Allegro Coffee)를 출시하기도 했다.
