Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Color, Museum at FIT
색깔로서 핑크(pink)는 소녀 취향, 발레리나, 바비 인형 등 여성성의 상징으로 간주되어 왔다. 몰리 링월드가 사춘기 소녀로 나오는 '프리티 인 핑크(Pretty in Pink)'가 나왔고, 지금 브로드웨이에서 공연 중인 뮤지컬 '민 걸즈(Mean Girls)'는 수요일 핑크색 옷을 입은 관객에게만 러시티켓($42.50)을 제공하는 마케팅을 벌이고 있다.
핑크는 소녀, 블루는 소년이라는 컬러의 스테레오 타입은 사실상 20세기 중반에 시작됐다. 루이 15세의 애첩이었던 마담 드 퐁파두르는 프랑스 궁정에서 핑크색을 유행시켰고, 남성들이 핑크 수트을 입기도 했다. 인도에서는 남성들도 핑크색 의상을 즐겨 입는다.

하지만, 이제 핑크는 여성 파워의 색으로 변신 중이다. 유방암 의식(Breast Cancer Awareness) 캠페인에서 핑크 리본은 열정, 자유, 건강과 강인한 여성상을 상징한다.
지난해와 올 3월 워싱턴 DC와 뉴욕을 비롯 전국에서 열린 여성 행진(Women's March) 때 여성들은 귀가 달린 핑크색 털모자(pussy hat)를 쓰고 행진했다. 예쁘고, 달콤하며, 유치하고, 치졸하면서도 로맨틱한 컬러의 상징 핑크가 쿨하고, 유니섹스이며, 정치적인 컬러로 해석되고 있다. 고정관념의 해체다.

한인타운 인근 FIT 패션 뮤지엄에서는 핑크를 주제로 한 특별전 'Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Color'(9/7-1/5, 2019)를 열고 있다.
발레리 스틸(Valerie Steele) FIT 뮤지엄 관장이 기획한 이 전시에는 엘사 스키아파렐리(Elsa Schiaparelli), 크리스천 디오르(Christian Dior), 이브 생 로랑(Yves Saint Laurent), 구찌 디자이너 알레싼드로 미셸(Alessandro Michele of Gucci), 꼼므데가르송의 레이 카와쿠보(Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons) 등의 드레스가 선보이는 중이다.

핑크 특별전엔 한인 사진작가 윤정미(JeongMee Yoon)씨의입체모형(diorama) '지유와 그녀의 핑크색 물건들(Jeeyoo and Her Pink Things, 2007)가 주목을 끈다. 이 작품은 소녀 지유가 갖고 노는 핑크색 물건들을 모은 설치작이다. 윤정미씨는 2005년부터 블루와 핑크 프로젝트를 통해 남아는 청색, 여아는 핑크로 스테레오타입화한 사회를 폭로해왔다.
윤정미씨는 서울대 서양화과 졸업 후 홍익대학원 산업디자인과를 거쳐 2006년 스쿨오브비주얼아트에서 사진, 비디오, 연관 미디어로 석사학위를 받았다. '핑크 프로젝트'는 1999년 아카데미 시상식에서 배우 기네스 팰트로가 입었던 랄프 로렌(Ralph Lauren)의 핑크색 실크 가운 옆에 설치되어 있다.
