두산갤러리 뉴욕은 2019년 6월 27일부터 8월 15일까지 두산갤러리 뉴욕 10주년을 기념하기 위한 특별전인 《Decade Studio》를 개최한다. 한국 기업에서 운영하는 비영리재단인 두산연강재단은 2009년 한국 최초로 젊은 예술가들의 창작활동을 지원할 목적으로 두산갤러리와 레지던시 공간을 미국 뉴욕의 첼시 지역에 개관했다. 뉴욕 주정부와 교육청의 정식 인가를 받고 설립한 두산갤러리 뉴욕과 두산레지던시 뉴욕은 국내외에서 활동하는 40세 이하의 한국 작가들을 대상으로 하며, 2009년부터 올해 2019년까지 58명의 작가를 지원해 오고 있다.
두산갤러리 뉴욕과 레지던시가 위치한 첼시 25가는 유수의 갤러리들을 이웃으로 두고 있어 전세계 예술 애호가들과 관계자들의 이목이 집중되는 곳이다. 그러므로 이 곳에서 예술가들이 자신의 작품을 선보이는 기회를 얻기는 쉽지 않다. 젊은 예술가들에게 이런 지원을 하는 것은 1978년부터 40년 넘게 사회공헌 활동을 활발하게 하며, 순수 기초학문연구 및 교육 분야의 인재양성을 넘어 문화예술계로까지 외연을 확장하고자 했던 두산연강재단의 취지와 맞닿아 있다. 2019년 현재 두산갤러리 서울은 12년째 운영해 오고 있으며, 뉴욕은 어느덧 10년을 맞이하고 있다. 한국의 젊은 예술가들을 뉴욕에 소개하는 국내 유일한 기관으로써 매해 4명의 작가들에게 6개월씩 11.5평의 독립된 거주공간과 46평 가량의 개인작업실을 제공하고 24평 크기의 갤러리에서 개인전의 기회가 주어지고 있다. 2009년 개관 초기에 참여했던 작가들은 어느덧 중견 작가가 되어 작품의 깊이를 더해 가고 있고, 2019년에 현재 입주해 있는 30대 작가들은 뉴욕의 생동하는 에너지에 자극 받으며 작품에 대해 고민하는 기쁨을 누리고 있다. 한국의 젊은 작가로 뉴욕이라는 도시에서 6개월의 시간을 작업에 대한 생각으로, 혹은 작업 외에 돌아보지 못했던 예술가로서의 자신을 바라볼 수 있는 시간을 갖는다는 것은 큰 행운일 것이다.
이번 전시는 2011년에 입주했고, 2009년에 두산갤러리에서 개인전을 했던 작가 이주요를 기획자로 초청하여 그를 통해 두산갤러리 뉴욕의 지난 10년의 시간을 돌아보는 동시에 그 동안 함께한 58명의 작가들을 유무형의 형태로 초대한다. 이주요는 일상적 사물과 재료들을 예민한 시선으로 바라보고 자신이 적응할 수 있는 환경으로 만드는 과정에서 발생하는 이야기들을 드로잉과 설치작품으로 보여 주었고, 2016년부터 2018년까지는 2015년에 두산레지던시 뉴욕에 입주하면서 전시를 했던 작가 정지현과 협업 프로젝트 <Dawn Breaks>를 국내외에 선보이기도 했다. 이 프로젝트는 이야기를 전달하는 매개체로 확장된 퍼포먼스의 가능성을 실험하면서, 동료 작가들의 작품을 소개하는 장치로 작동하기도 했다.
이런 작가의 행보는 이번 전시 《Decade Studio》의 중요한 기획의 틀이 되면서, 두산갤러리 뉴욕과 함께했던 작가들의 작품과 자료를 함께 살펴볼 수 있도록 만든다. 이주요는 갤러리 공간과 전시장 내부에 설치되는 오브제 자체를 일종의 발화하는 몸으로 보고, 각 작품의 이야기를 담아내기도 하고 새로운 이야기를 만들기도 하는 장치로써 관람객에게 전시 작품을 소개한다. 이번 전시에서 선보이는 21점의 작품들은 대부분 두산컬렉션의 소장 작품으로 구성되어 있다. 갤러리 공간과 오브제는 내러티브 자체가 되어 전시 작품들과 자료의 관계성을 벗어나 비언어적 정보로 전환시키는 일종의 운송시설이 된다. 이미지와 텍스트가 섬세하게 교차되고 엮일 수 있도록 만든 이 장치는 관객의 개별적 선택에 의해 작품을 볼 수 있도록 만들어 감각적이고 신체적인 관람이 되도록 안내한다. 또한 관람과 정보를 받아들이는 것을 다층적이지만 독립적인 경험이 될 수 있도록 만든다. 이번 전시는 지난 10 년간 두산갤러리 뉴욕과 함께했던 58명 작가들의 행적을 한 사람의 시선, 하나의 가치로 범주화 하지 않고 기념될 수 있기를 바라는 새로운 시도이다. 작가 이주요를 통해 동료 작가들과 함께 하는 두산갤러리 뉴욕에서의 대화는 현재에 머물러있지 않고 시공간을 넘어 새로운 장면과 경험을 제공할 것이다.

DOOSAN Gallery New York presents Decade Studio, a special exhibition celebrating the 10th anniversary of the gallery. The exhibition opens in June 27th and continues through August 15th. Established in 2009 in Chelsea, Doosan Gallery New York has supported South Korean emerging artists as a part of Doosan Yonkang Foundation, a nonprofit corporation run by a global company Doosan Group. Along with DOOSAN Gallery, Doosan Yonkang Foundation runs the artist’s residency program DOOSAN Residency New York as an integral body of its mission of fostering young artists’ professional and artistic development. As the first nonprofit Korean art gallery established in New York City, DOOSAN Gallery New York is a certified nonprofit organization by the State of New York and the New York State Education Department. Both DOOSAN Gallery New York and DOOSAN Residency New York support artists of South Korean nationality under the age of 40 who work both nationally and internationally. The gallery and residency have supported 58 artists since its initiation.
DOOSAN Gallery New York and DOOSAN Residency New York are located on 25th Street in Chelsea, one of the most influential art districts in the world. Neighboring the internationally recognized art galleries, DOOSAN Gallery provides artists invaluable opportunities to present their work to art lovers, critics, curators, and fellow artists from all around the world. DOOSAN Residency New York accommodates four artists a year, providing each artist a 410-square-foot apartment and 1640-square-foot individual studio space for six months. Artists also have an opportunity to have a solo exhibition in the 850-square-foot gallery space at DOOSAN Gallery New York. By supporting the gallery and the residency in New York, Doosan Yonkang Foundation has expanded its corporate philanthropy, which has been executed for over 40 years since 1978 to the realm of cultural activities. As of 2019, DOOSAN Gallery Seoul and DOOSAN Gallery New York have come to celebrate their 12th and 10th anniversaries respectively.

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of DOOSAN Gallery New York, Decade Studio invites Jewyo Rhii as a guest curator who was a 2011 DOOSAN Residency New York artist and had a solo exhibition at DOOSAN Gallery New York in 2009. Under Rhii’s curatorial guidance, Decade Studio illustrates on the past ten-year history of the gallery, inviting 58 previous residency artists. As an artist, Rhii has created drawings and installation pieces by reinventing and reconstructing everyday objects into her own sculptural language. In 2016 and 2018 Rhii presented a project Dawn Breaks in collaboration with the artist Jihyun Jung at The Showroom in London and attracted global audiences. In Dawn Breaks Rhii and Jung challenged the form of performance art by operating the whole project itself as a vehicle that creates and narrates the stories of participating artists.
Offering a curatorial framework for Decade Studio, the form of storytelling in Dawn Breaks brings artists who previously exhibited at DOOSAN Gallery New York to the present in an archival setting. Rhii, by taking the objects installed in the gallery space as a body, which speaks for itself, tells audiences the stories of old and new through works of various artists. The gallery space and the objects in it, which have evolved into a narrative per se enable nonverbal communication between the works and audiences. The narrative constructed in the gallery space interweaving through image and text offers audiences a multi-layered yet singular bodily experience. Looking back on the trajectories of 58 artists from a renewed perspective, Decade Studio initiates a conversation between past, present, and future of South Korean artists within the global art world of New York City. Twenty-one works in Decade Studio are mostly derived from DOOSAN Collection.
Jewyo Rhii was born in 1971 in Seoul, South Korea. She received her M.F.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia (1997) and Chelsea College of Art and Design, London (2000). She participated in Rijksacademie Residency, Amsterdam (2004-5). Her solo exhibitions have taken place at numerous international institutions including Amanda Wilkinson Gallery (2017, London, U.K.), Galerie Ursula Walbrol (2015, Dusseldorf, Germany), Queens Museum (2014, New York, USA), Van Abbemuseum (2013, Eindhoven, The Netherlands), MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst (2013, Frankfurt, Germany), Artsonje Center (2013, Seoul, Korea), DOOSAN Gallery New York (2009, New York, U.S.A.), among others. Large number of group shows have accommodated Rhii including The 11th Gwangju Biennale (2016, Gwangju, Korea), Queens Museum (2015, New York, U.S.A.), Ludwig Forum Aachen (2015, Aachen, Germany), MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst (2014, Frankfurt, Germany), Kunstmuseum Basel (2013, Basel, Switzerland), La Triennale Paris (2012. Paris, France), Media City Seoul, Seoul Museum of Art (2010, Seoul, Korea), the 7th Gwangju Biennale (2008, Gwangju, Korea), The 10th Istanbul Biennale (2007, Istanbul, Turkey), and the Korean Pavilion, The 51st Venice Biennale (2005, Venice, Italy).
