한인 유학생 강도살해 누명 흑인 28년 옥살이 후 석방

필라델피아의 흑인 남성 체스터 홀만(Chester Hollman III, 48)이 1991년 한인 유학생 호태정(Tae Jung Ho)씨 강도살해죄로 28년 가까이 옥살이한 후 석방됐다. 체스터 홀만씨는 1991년 필라델피아 22nd and Sansom St. 인근에서 펜실베니아대학교의 어학 연수생이던 호태정씨를 살해한 혐의로 무기징역을 받고 수감되었었다.
경찰은 사건 후 22시간 경과 후 익명의 목격자 제보전화를 받았지만, 변호사, 검찰에 알리지 않았다. 체스터 홀만씨는 당시 범죄에 사용된 차량과 앞 세자리가 같은 백색 셰비 블레이저 SUV를 운전 중이었다. 홀만씨는 체포 당시 20세로 직장에 다니며 전과가 없었다.
홀만씨 사건은 2017년 4월 필라델피아 인톼이러지가용의자, 증인, 경찰에 의한 거짓말 관행의 사법제도 시리즈를 연재하면서 부각됐으며, 포드캐스트 'Undisclosed'에 의해 홀만의 무혐의 가능성이 제기됐다. 2012년 한 목격자가 경찰의 압력으로 거짓증언한 것으로 알려졌다. 그의 변호사는 알란 토버(Alan Tauber).

murder though, he was charged with first-degree murder, simple assault, aggravated
assault, conspiracy, robbery, theft, carrying an unlicensed firearm on public streets, and
receiving stolen property. You could say that they threw the book at him.
