In of his five decades of filmmaking, Martin Scorsese has regularly focused his lens on real life subjects and events that have had both personal and broader impacts within his lifetime – from the roots of his home and heritage (Italianamerican, Lady by the Sea, The Neighborhood); to his love affair with cinema (A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies, My Voyage to Italy, A Letter to Elia, The Key to Reserva); to artists who have shaped America’s popular music soundscape, including The Rolling Stones (Shine a Light), Bob Dylan (Rolling Thunder Revue, No Direction Home: Bob Dylan), George Harrison (George Harrison: Living in The Material World), The Band (The Last Waltz), and the influence of the Blues (Feel Like Going Home); to extraordinary individuals, including Fran Lebowitz (Public Speaking), The New York Review of Books editor Robert Silvers (The 50 Year Argument), raconteur Steven Prince (American Boy: A Profile of Steven Prince), and renowned designer Giorgio Armani (Made in Milan).

“I’ve never thought of fiction and documentary as separate categories,” says Scorsese. “In fiction you’re looking for the documentary elements and the surprises of real behavior, and in documentary you’re always looking for the story, the unifying thread. For me, fiction and non-fiction have always been in a creative dialogue. And I’m very happy to see the non-fiction side of my work celebrated at that essential institution of New York cinema culture, Film Forum.”

“Marty loves filmmaking, no matter the genre, and with documentaries he is free to pursue the people and subjects that spark his passion, intellect and curiosity,” says Margaret Bodde, producer of several films in the series.
