뉴욕한국문화원 개원 40주년 백남준 특별전 개막

조윤증 뉴욕한국문화원장이 5일 백남준 특별전 'Nam June Paik: The Maestro of Time' 개막식에서 인삿말을 하고 있다.

 

 

이 전시엔 백남준(1932-2006)이 모차르트(1756-1791) 사망 200주기를 기해 86개의 TV 모니터로 제작한 'M200/ Video Wall'과 비디오 샹들리에(Video Chandelier No.4)'가 소개되고 있다. 두 전시 작품은 홍성은(Soung E. Hong) 라이너 그룹(Rainier Group USA) 회장의 컬렉션이다.

이와 함께 중앙일보 사진기자 출신 최재영씨의 백남준 굿 사진도 전시 중이다. 이 사진들은 1990년 백남준이 서울 갤러리 현대 뒤뜰에서 그의 친구이자 아티스트였던 조셉 보이스(Joseph Beuys, 1921-1986)에게 바쳤던 진혼굿 퍼포먼스를 촬영한 것이다.  

 

 

조윤증 뉴욕한국문화원장은 "시대를 뛰어넘은 백남준의 통찰력을 거울삼아 뉴욕한국문화원이 걸어온 지난 40년을 되돌아보면서 새로운 비전과 미래를 준비하겠다는 의지를 담았다"고 전시의 의의를 밝혔다.

백남준 특별전 개막식은 뉴욕한국문화원의 개원일(1979년 12월 5일)에 맞추어 특별 프로그램으로 진행됐다. 

뉴욕한국문화원의 발자취를 소개하는 비디오가 상영된 후 2018년 지나 바카우어 국제 피아노 콩쿠르'에서 한국인 최초로 우승한 신창용씨가 슈만의 '트로이메라이'를 연주했다.

이어 조윤증 뉴욕한국문화원장이 개원 40년 맞은 감회와 한류열풍을 담은 인삿말을 했다. 그리고, 장원삼 뉴욕총영사, 토마스 J. 번 코리아소사이어티 회장, 찰스 윤 뉴욕한인회장의 축사와 축하공연(대금주자 원장현, 고수 이춘승의 '소쇄원 춤산조')이 펼쳐졌다.

뉴욕한국문화원 개원 40주년을 겸한 전시 개막식에는 백남준 굿 사진작가 최재영, 김미희씨 부부를 비롯, 뉴욕의 한인 미술가 존 배, 김차섭, 김명희, 강익중씨, 그리고 설원재단 이사장 정영양 박사, 이숙녀 알재단 회장,  박수연 뉴욕한국국악협회 회장, 박윤숙 뉴욕국악원장, 무용가 이송희씨, 뮤지션 한대수씨 등 문화계 인사들과 백남준 작품 소장가 홍성은 라이너 그룹 회장 등이 참석했다.

 

 

 

그리고, 링컨센터의 뉴오디언스 이니시어티브 어씨스턴트 디렉터 캐스린 피터슨(Kathryn Peterson), 카네기홀의 정부홍보 디렉터 데이빗 프로이덴탈(David Freudenthal), 뉴욕현대미술관(MoMA)의 국제프로그램 코디네이터 마르타 댄시( Marta Dansie), 메트로폴리탄 뮤지엄의 한국미술 큐레이터 엘리노어 수아 현(Eleanor Hyun), 브루클린뮤지엄의 아시아 미술 큐레이터 조안 커민스(Joan Cummins) , 카네기 카운슬의 홍보 디렉터 조안 마이어스(Joanne Myers), 월드뮤직 인스티튜트 원장 가비 새핑톤(Gaby Sappngton), 서브웨이 시네마 공동창립자 고란 토팔로비치(Goran Topalovic) 등 뉴욕의 문화예술 전문기관 관계자들과 백남준의 비디오 에디터이자 콜라보레이터 폴 개린(Paul Garrin), 백남준 테크니션 아담 타예(Adam Taye), 백남준의 부인 구보타 시게코 재단 디렉터 노만 발라드(Norman Ballard)도 자리를 빛내주었다. 한편, 카네기홀의 클라이브 길린슨 관장과 한인 재즈 뮤지션 그레이스 켈리는 비디오로 축하 메시지를 전했다.

Director’s Remarks at 40th Anniversary Ceremony

 

Ladies and Gentlemen, and distinguished guests. Good evening and welcome.

 

It’s an honor to be with you tonight to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Korean Cultural Center New York, an important milestone in our history. 

 

As you may know, age 40 is when you get old enough to know better, and young enough to do it anyway. We are so happy to celebrate our big forty with you and I thank every one of you for joining us on this occasion. 

 

We have special guests from esteemed art organizations in New York tonight.

 

In 1979 today, this institution was established for a simple mission: 

to share and spread Korean culture in all of its diversity to the New York community and beyond. Through the years, this goal has not changed. 

However, how we’ve been moving forward to achieve this, evolves year after year. 

 

As you can see here today in this commemorative exhibition of Nam June Paik, Korea holds great soft power assets. And I am very proud of all the great artists, spearheaded by the likes of Cho Seong-jin, Yang Hye Gyu, and Bong Joon Ho who are most representative of Korean culture today.

 

One of the key ways that we’ve expanded Korean cultural contents is by the powerful collaborations and partnerships with our prominent friends who are here tonight. Without you, it would not be possible for Korean art, music, film and cuisine to be more welcomed and enjoyed by so many in the US. 

 

And I must say that without the support of over 300,000 of those of Korean background in our community, our accomplishments would not have been possible.

 

Lastly, I cannot thank enough Chairman Hong Soung Eun of the Rainier Group for his generous support by leasing us the <M200> tonight, and photographer Jae Young Choi for his beautiful works.

 

I would also like to express my deep appreciation for all those involved in this special event, especially Curator Hee Sung and Iris, along with my 10 strong staff members, so devoted and capable. 

 

Hope to see you all in our new building at 32nd Street in Manhattan in 2021.
