유대인 브로드웨이 Jew Broadway

극장주만큼 파워풀한 인물이 작곡가와 작가다. 극장가에 ‘유대인 브로드웨이(Jew Broadway)’라는 말도 있다. 뮤지컬계에 유대계 출신 뮤지컬 작곡가들과 희곡작가들이 유독 많았기 때문이다.

 

‘사운드 오브 뮤직’ ‘왕과 나’ ‘아가씨와 건달들’ ‘캬바레’ ‘시카고’ ‘리틀 나잇 뮤직’ '프로듀서' 등 히트 뮤지컬의 작곡가들은 유대인. 뉴욕 연극계의 두 기둥 아서 밀러와 닐 사이먼도 유대계다. 

 

초창기 뮤지컬을 쓴 제롬 컨(쇼 보트), 오스카 햄머스타인 2세(사운드 오브 뮤직, 오클라호마, 사우스 패시픽, 왕과 나), 조지 거쉰(쇼 걸), 프랭크 래서(아가씨와 건달들, 노력하지 않고 비즈니스에서 성공하는 법), 러너 앤 로이(마이 페어 레이디) 등 뮤지컬 황금기의 이름난 작곡가들이 유대계였다. 또, 레너드 번스타인(웨스트 사이드 스토리), 캔더 앤 엡(캬바레, 시카고, 포세), 스티븐 손하임(리틀 나잇 뮤직, 스위니 토드)도 나왔다. 

 

위대한 뉴욕의 희곡작가 아서 밀러(세일즈맨의 죽음)와 닐 사이먼(브라이튼비치의 추억)도 유대인인 것은 우연일까? 유대인들이 브로드웨이에 기여한 것은 재즈계에 흑인이 기여한 것과 유사하다는 것. 브로드웨이에서 '북 오브 몰몬' '시스터 액트' '립 오브 페이스' '가즈펠' 등 신(God)에 대한 뮤지컬이 범람을 이룬 것도 이와 무관하지는 않을 것이다. 

 

한편, 오프브로드웨이에선 노골적으로 Jew를 소재로 한 작품들이 종종 올려지고 있다.  '늙은 유대인 농담하기(Old Jews Telling Jokes)',  뮤지컬 '유대인 하나가 브루클린에서 자란다(A Jew Grows in Brooklyn)' 등이 공연된다. 그러니 브로드웨이에 유대인 컬러가 짙은 것은  필연이다.

 

 

오프 브로드웨이에서 브로드웨이 상륙

오프 브로드웨이는 1950년대 상업적인 브로드웨이에 대항하는 하나의 운동으로 시작됐다. 돈벌이에 급급한 브로드웨이의 화려한  볼거리와는 달리, 오프-브로드웨이는 참신한 소재와 실험적인 공연이 주로 무대에 올려진다.

상업성과 작품성을 겸비한 오프-브로드웨이 작품은 브로드웨이에 입성하는 경우가 종종 있다. 뮤지컬 ‘헤어’ ‘가드스펠’ ‘코러스라인’ ‘리틀 숍 오브 호러’ ‘조지와 일요일 공원에서’ ‘렌트’ ‘그레이 가든’ ‘애브뉴 Q’ ‘유린타운’ ‘제 25회 푸트남카운티 스펠링비’ ‘록 오브 에이지’ ‘인더 하이츠’ ‘스프링 어웨이크닝’ ‘넥스트 투 노말’ 모두 오프 브로드웨이에서 초연되어 브로드웨이에 데뷔했다. 하지만, 오프 브로드웨이 작품은 토니상 후보에 오를 자격이 없다. 토니상은 브로드웨이만의 잔치다.
