태 켈러(Tae Keller) 동화 '호랑이를 덫에 가두면'

한국계 동화작가 태 켈러(Tae Keller )의 '호랑이를 덫에 가두면(When You Trap a Tiger)'이 미 권위있는 아동문학상 뉴베리 메달(Newbery Medal)을 수상했다. 

 

'호랑이를 덫에 가두면'은 앓고 있는 할머니 집에 살게된 혼혈 소녀 릴리의 이야기다. 할머니는 릴리에게 한국의 민담, 사기꾼 호랑이 등에 대한 이야기를 들려준다. 어느날 마법의 호랑이가 나타나 릴리에게 할머니의 건강을 찾아주는 댓가로 흥정하게 된다. 이야기 속에는 'Halmoni' 'eggi' 등 한국어가 나온다.

 

태 켈러는 어릴 적 한인 외할머니 구태임(Tae Im Ku)씨로부터 들은 전래동화(곶감과 호랑이)에서 영감을 받아 썼다고 밝혔다. '곶감과 호랑이'는 배 고픈 호랑이가 마을로 내려왔다가 우는 아기가 곶감에 울음을 그치자 무서워서  달아나는 이야기로 이미지와 실체, 착각과 용기에 대한 우화다. 태 켈러의 동화에서 릴리의 할머니는 백인 중심 사회에서 아시아의 지혜와 치유력을 지닌 인물이다.

뉴베리 메달 심사위원단은 "마술적 리얼리즘의 걸작으로 한국의 민담에 새생명을 불어넣은 사랑, 상실, 그리고 희망에 대한 파워풀한 스토리다. 할머니 이야기를 통해 릴리는 이야기가 우리의 과거를 공유하고, 미래를 형성할 수 있다는 것을 알게된다"고 평했다. 뉴베리 메달 위원장 존다 C. 맥네어(Jonda C. Manair) 박사는 "이야기의 파워에 관한 켈러의 흥미진진한 이야기는 독자들로 하여금 자신들의 힘과 용기를 보여줌으로써 자신 속의 호랑이를 포용하도록 도움을 준다"고 밝혔다.   

 

 

 

미 서평지 커커스 리뷰(Kirkus Review)는 "소통, 가족, 목소리에 대한 갈망이 마법의 손길로 생명을 무릅쓰고 포효하는 작품"이라고 평했다. 한국에선 돌베개 출판사가 청소년 소설 시리즈 '꿈꾸는 돌'로 번역(강나은 역) 출간될 예정이다. 돌베개는 2019년 태 켈러의 전작 '깨지기 쉬운 것들의 과학(The Science of Breakable Things)'을 번역(강나은 역) 출간한 바 있다. '깨지기 쉬운 것들의 과학'은 '달걀을 깨뜨리지 않고 떨어 뜨리기' 과학 실험 일지 형식으로 쓰여진 장편 소설로 우울증에 걸린 식물학자 엄마를 바라보는 딸의 이야기를 담았다.  

 

태 켈러는 하와이 호놀룰루에서 태어나 11살 때 시를 아동 잡지 'Stone Soup'에 발표했으며, 9/11에 관한 시는 교과서에도 실렸다. 할머니에게 바치는 시 'Halmoni, I Wish You a Pendant'는 2005년 'New Moon, the Magazine for Girls and Their Dreams'에 실렸다.

 

2015년 브린모대(Bryn Mawr College)를 졸업한 후 2018년 '깨지기 쉬운 것들의 과학(The Science of Breakable Things)'을 냈으며, 두번째 아동 도서 '호랑이를 덫에 가두면'으로 뉴베리 메달을 비롯, 아시아/태평양미국인 아동도서상(Asian/Pacific American Award for Children’s Literature), 보스턴 글로브-혼 도서상(Boston Globe–Horn Book Award) 등을 수상했다. 태 켈러는 자신의 정체성처럼 혼혈 소녀들의 목소리를 담는데 주력하고 있다. 

 

 

 

엄마 노라 옥자 켈러(Nora Okja Keller, 55)씨는 '종군 위안부(Comfort Woman, 1997)'로 미도서상(American Book Awards)을 수상한 작가다. 노라 옥자 켈러씨는 서울에서 태어나 3살 때부터 하와이에서 자랐다. 하와이대에서 심리학과 영어 복수 전공 후 산타크루즈 캘리포니아대에서 미국문학으로 석사와 박사학위를 받았다. 2002년엔 한국전쟁 때 두 소녀의 상흔을 담은 소설 '폭스 걸(Fox Girl)'을 출간했다.

 

켈러씨는 모녀의 모교인 호놀룰루의 푸나호우 학교(Punahou School)의 영어 교사이기도 하다. 노라 옥자 켈러씨의 모친은 한인, 부친은 독일계 컴퓨터 엔지니어로 제임스 켈러씨와 결혼 후 모친의 이름(Tae Im Beane)을 딴 태 켈러와 선희 켈러(Sunhi Keller)를 두었다. 

 

미어린이도서관협회(ALSC, Association for Library Service to Children)이 주관하는 뉴베리 메달은 1921년 프레데릭 G. 멜처(Frederic G. Melcher)가 18세기 영국의 청소년 도서 출판인 존 뉴베리(John Newbery)의 이름을 따서 창설했다. 2002년엔 코리안아메리칸 작가 린다 수 박(Linda Sue Park)이 ‘사금파리 한 조각(A Single Shard)’으로 수상한 바 있다. 

 

 

 

한편, 그림동화책 부문상인 2021 칼데콧 메달(Caldecott Medal)은 미카엘라 고드(Michaela Goade)가 삽화를 그리고, 캐롤 린드스트롬(Carole Lindstrom)이 쓴 '우리는 물의 보초자들(We Are Water Protectors)'이 수상했다. 이 책은 미 인디언 원주민 소녀 오지브위(Ojibwe)가 다코타의 파이프라인 사용권에 맞서 싸우는 이야기다. 수채화와 꽃무늬를 사용해 삽화를 그린 미카엘라 고드는 알래스카의 인디언 원주민(Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska) 출신이다.
