휘트니뮤지엄의 소장품 전시에서 돋보였던 흑인 거장 3인 에드 클락(Ed Clark, 1926-2019), 노만 루이스(Norman Lewis, 1909-1979), 그리고 제이콥 로렌스(Jacob Lawrence, 1917-2000)의 삶과 작품세계를 알아보았다.  

 

#BlackLivesMatter 이후 미술계에 일고 있는 흑인 작가 열풍이 불고 있다. 노만 루이스, 제이콥 로렌스, 에드 클락, 알마 토마스(Alma Thomas, 1891-1978), 그리고 바스키아(Jean-Michel Basquiat, 1960-1988)는 떠났다.

 

그러면, 주목해야할 우리 시대 흑인 작가들은 누구일까? 미술 전문 웹사이트 Artsy.com의 편집진이 2019년 2월 선정한 가장 영향력있는 생존 흑인 아티스트들 20인(The Most Influential Living African American Artists , 성 알파벳 순)을 소개한다. 

 

이 리스트에는 2019년 메트로폴리탄 뮤지엄 건물벽에 조각을 설치한 뮤지엄케냐 출신 여성 조각가 왕게치 무투(Wangechi Mutu, B. 1972)와 2018 구겐하임뮤지엄 휴고 보스상 수상 조각가 시몬 리(Simone Leigh, B. 1967)가 빠져서 아쉬움을 준다.
