한인 코고나다('After Yang') 감독, 각본상/ 'Return to Seoul' 국제영화상/

양자경(미셸 여) 주연의 '모든 것, 모든 곳, 한꺼번에(Everything Everywhere All at Once)'

 

할리우드의 메이저 스튜디오에 대항하는 저예산의 독립영화상, 2023 인디펜던트 스피릿 어워즈(Independent Spirit Awards, 독립영화상) 후보가 발표됐다. 

 

제 38회를 맞은 독립영화상 후보에선 다니엘 관과 다니엘 샤이너트 공동 감독(The Daniels)의 양자경(미셸 여) 주연의 '모든 것, 모든 곳, 한꺼번에(Everything Everywhere All at Once)'가 8개 부문, 토드 필즈 감독의 타르(Tár)'가 7개, 샬롯 웰즈 감독의 애프터선(Aftersun)'이 5개 부문에 지명됐다. '모든 것, 모든 곳, 한꺼번에'는 뉴욕에서 세탁소를 운영하는 중국계 이민자(양자경 분)가 IRS의 세무조사를 받으면서 벌어지는 멀티버스(多重宇宙 / Multiverse) 소재의 ㅡ블랙코미디/판타지/SF/무술/애니메이션 등 기생충'처럼 복합장르 영화다. 

 

코리안 아메리칸 감독 코고나다(Kogonada) 감독의 SF드라마 '애프터 양(After Yang)'는 감독상, 각본상 후보에 올랐다. 콜린 파렐이 주연한 이 영화는 입양딸과 로보트 자식을 키우는 흑백 부부의 이야기다. 코고나다 감독은 이민진 소설을 드라마화한 '파친코'를 저스틴 전과 공동으로(4개 에피소드) 연출한 바 있다. 그리고, 게이 드라마의 시나리오와 주연을 맡은 '파이어 아일랜드(Fire Island)'의 입양한인 조엘 김 부스터(Joel Kim Booster, 김준민)는 데뷔 각본상, 프랑스로 입양된 한인 여성의 서울 여정을 담은 '리턴 투 서울(Return to Seoul, 감독 다비 초우)'는 국제영화상 부문 후보에 올랐다. 

 

 

 

놀랍게도 올 베니스 영화제에서 호평받은 다렌 아로노프스키 감독, 브랜든 프레이저의 신작 '고래(The Whale)'는 후보에 지명되지 못했다.  유색 영화인 영화를 선호했기 때문일까?

 

한편, 미래 발표된 감독/캐스팅 디렉터/앙상블 출연진에게 수여하는 로버트알트만상은 사라 폴리 감독의 '여성들 말하다(Women Talking)'가 수상했다. 올해엔 세계 25개국에서 총 409편이 출품됐다. 시나리오와 감독 부문 후보의 61%가 여성이며, 배우 후보의 70%가 여성이며, 전체 후보의 51%가 여성 33%가 유색인종(BIPOC: black, Indigenous and people of color)이다. 

 

 

10월 10일 링컨센터 월터리드시어터에서 'Women Talking'의 뉴욕영화제 언론 시사회 후 사라 폴리 감독과 출연진, 프로듀서의 질의응답 시간. 

 

올해부터 달라진 것은 주조연 연기 부문에 남녀 성 구분을 제거했다. 신설된 Best Breakthrough Performance는 주목할만한 캐릭터로 더 많은 반향을 얻은 연기자에게 주어진다. 또한, 출품 자격 영화를 제작비 3천달러 미만으로 올렸으며, 존 카사베츠상의 상한선은 이전의 50만 달러에서 1백만 달러로 올렸다. 

 

수상자(작)는 Film Independents(former Independent Features Project-필자로 90년대 후반 멤버로 시사회와 투표에 참가했음)의 회원들의 투표로 결정된다. 시상식은 아카데미상 시상식 전날인 내년 3월 4일 캘리포니아 산타모니카 해변에서 열린다.
