출생증명서를 위조해 뉴브런스윅 고등학교에 다녔던 신혜정씨가 처음 법정에 출두해 무죄를 주장했다고 뉴욕타임스가 보도했다. 신혜정씨의 변호인 대런 겔버(Darren M. Gelber)는 "이상하지만, 사람들이 이해하기 어려울 수도 있다"고 주장했다. 또 다른 변호인 헨리 홍 정(Henry Hong Jung)은 "신씨가 오랫동안 타국에서 가족과 떨어져 지냈다"고 말했다. 

 

신혜정씨는 2천400명이 재학 중인 뉴브런스고교에서 약 3마일 떨어진 럿거스 대학교 근처의 고층 아파트에 살고 있다. 석사과정을 밟고 있지만, 이혼 후 취직이 되지 않았다. 집주인은 지난해 렌트 2만 달러를 밀리자 소송을 제기했다. 겔버 변호사는 이혼과 빚으로 인한 스트레스를 강조했다. 

 

한편, 재학생들은 신씨가 학교 밖 장소에서 만남을 주선하는 등 악의적인 의도가 있었을 가능성이 있다고 우려를 표명했다. 뉴브런스윅 경찰은 신씨가 학생들에게 폭력을 가할 의도가 있었다는 증거는 없다고 밝혔다.

뉴저지 뉴브런스윅에 사는 한인 신혜정(Hyejeong Shin, 29)씨가 출생증명서를 위조해 뉴브런스윅 고등학교에 등록했다가 4일만에 체포됐다. 럿거스대학교는 신혜정이라는 이름의 29세 여성이 2019년 정치과학 전공, 중국어 부전공으로 졸업했으며, 글로벌 시티즌의 사무장을 지냈다고 밝혔다. 신씨는 뉴브런스윅 다운타운의 럭셔리 아파트에 살고 있는 것으로 알려졌다. 경찰은 신씨가 왜 문서 위조로 고등학교에 입학했는지 주사 중이다.

29 Year Old Female Uses Fraudulent Documents to Enroll in New Brunswick High School as a Student

 

 On January 24, 2023, Hyejeong Shin (29 year old female, residing in New Brunswick) was charged with one (1) count of providing a false government document with the intent to verify one’s identity or age, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:21-2.1(c). This charge is a third-degree offense. Specifically, Ms. Shin provided a false birth certificate to the New Brunswick Board of Education with the intent to enroll as a juvenile high-school student.

 

 Pursuant to New Jersey statutes (18a:36-25.1) and guidance from the New Jersey Department of Education, chools are required to immediately enroll unaccompanied children, even in the absence of records normally required for enrollment. Proof of guardianship is not necessary to immediately enroll an unaccompanied child or youth. Although a school district might request documents such as a birth certificate to verify a child’s age, a school district may not prevent or discourage a child, including an unaccompanied child, from enrolling in or attending school because he or she lacks a birth certificate or has records that indicate a foreign place of birth, such as a foreign birth certificate.

 

 As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charge against Hyejeong Shin is merely an accusation and she is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
