Rafael Viñoly (1944-2023)

맨해튼 '432 파크애브뉴' 빌딩, 재즈엣 링컨센터와  서울 종로타워를 설계한 스타 건축가 라파엘 비뇰리(Rafael Viñoly, 78)가 2일 뇌동맥류(brain aneurysm)으로 세상을 떠났다. 

 

1944년 우루과이 몬테비데오에서 영화감독 아버지와 수학교사 어머니 사이에서 태어난 비뇰리는 아르헨티나 부에노스아이레스대학교에서 건축을 전공했다. 졸업 전 남미 전역에 건물을 설계한 회사 Estudio de Arquitectura Manteola-Petchersky-Sánchez Gómez-Santos-Solsona-Viñoly를 시작했다. 

 

1976년 아르헨티나를 집권한 군사정부의 박해를 피해 1978년 미국으로 이주해 하버드대에서 가르쳤다. 1983년엔 자신의 건축회사 Rafael Viñoly Architects를 설립해 뉴욕, 팔로알토(CA), 런던, 맨체스터, 아부다비, 부에노스아이레스에 사무실을 두고 운영해왔다.

유리 자재에 독특한 디자인으로 도시의 랜드마크 빌딩가 트레이드마크인 비뇰리는 뉴욕시 5개 보로에서 모두 건축물을 설계한 몇명 안되는 건축가다. 가장 유명한 빌딩은 1,396피트(425.5미터) 높이, 85층의 콘도 타워 432파크애브뉴(@57스트릿)로 독일 아티스트 조셉 호프만(Josef Hoffmann)이 디자인한 휴지통(1905)에서 영감을 받은 것으로 알려졌다. 이 건물은 2015년 완공 당시 미국에서 세번째 높은 건물이자 세계 최고층의 주거 빌딩이었다. 맨해튼 링컨센터 인근 존제이 형사사법 칼리지, 브롱스에 레만칼리지 APEX, 브루클린어린이뮤지엄, 프린스턴대 스태디움과 필라델피아 키멜센터도 비뇰리가 설계했다.

비뇰리는 맨해튼 트라이베카와 롱아일랜드 워터밀, 런던을 오가며 살아왔다. 피아노 수집가였던 비뇰리는 워터밀에 9대의 콘서트 피아노를 소장할 피아노하우스를 만들기도 했다. 그는 인테리어 디자이너 부인 다이아나 비뇰리와 사이에 아들 로만과 양자 두명을 남겼다.
