2023 Brooklyn Book Festival

 

지난해 폭우로 취소되었던 축제들이 돌아왔다. 눈이 부시게 푸르른 가을날, 10월 1일 일요일 브루클린 보로홀에선 도서 축제(Brooklyn Book Festival), 브루클린 애틀랜틱 애브뉴에선 거리 축제 애틀랜틱 앤틱(Atlantic Antic)이 열렸다. 브루클린 도서 축제는 2006년 “멋지고, 똑똑하며 다양한(hip, smart, diverse)”을 모토로 시작됐다.   

 

한류(Korean Wave)의 지류로 K-Book-한인작가 도서 열풍을 빼놓을 수 없다. 2016년 한강이 '채식주의자'로 맨부커상 국제상을 수상했으며, 뉴욕 작가 수잔 최는 2019년 '신뢰연습(Trust Excerise)'로 전미도서상 소설 부문상, 2020 최돈미 시인이 'DMZ 콜로니(DMZ Colony)'로 전미도서상 시 부문상을 받았다. 그리고, 변호사 출신 이민진의 베스트셀러 '파친코(Pachinko, 2017)'는 2022년 애플TV+에서 8부작으로 방영됐다. 

 

 

2023 도서 축제에서도 간간이 한인 작가들의 책이 주목을 끌었다. 커버에 대담하게 이미지 없이 제목으로 디자인하는 출판사 웨이브 북스(Wave Books)는 최돈미씨의 'DMZ 콜로니'와 최씨가 편집하고, 번역에도 참가한 이상(Yi Sang)의 시집(영문)을 출판한 곳이다. 2년 전 도서 축제에서 발견해 'DMZ 콜로니'와 이상의 시집을 구입했었다.

독일에 사는 셰프 사라 헨크(Sarah Henke)는 1984년 한국에서 태어나 독일 가정에 입양됐다. 고등학교 졸업 후 독일과 포르투갈의 미슐랭 3스타 레스토랑에서 수련한 후 2011년 라인 지역의 요소(Yoso)의 수석 셰프로 미슐랭 1스타, 앤더나흐점 요소의 셰프로 미슐랭 1스타를 받았다. 고국을 방문해 서울, 부산, 경주, 안동 지역의 음식을 탐험하며 쓴 에세이와 레시피로 올 6월 'Korea (한국): My Culinary Homecoming'(2023, Culina Cooklbooks)을 출간했다.

한국의 웅진주니어에서 출간됐던 안재선(Ahn Jaesun)의 그림 동화책 '삼거리 양복점'은 샌프란시스코의 출판사 Transit Children's Edition에서 영문판 'The Tailor Shop at the Intersection'으로 번역 출간된다.(10/17) 모두들 한복을 입던 시절 삼거리에 양복점을 연 덕구씨의 장인정신을 담은 책이다. 번역은 Sora Kim-Russell이 맡았다. 2020년 볼로냐 라가치 상 오페라프리마 부문 스페셜 멘션 수상작.

린다 수 박(Linda Sue Park)의 그림동화책 '비빔밥(Bee-bim Bop!, 2005)'. 1960년 일리노이주 어바나에서 태어나 스탠포드대 영문과를 거쳐 런던대에서 모던 영국문학으로 석사학위를 받았다.

Korean American authors at the 2023 Brooklyn Book Festival

 

A Korean author writing in Japanese, Yu Miri has with over twenty books to her name. She received Japan’s most prestigious literary award, the Akutagawa Prize, and her novel Tokyo Ueno Station won the 2020 National Book Award for Translated Literature.

 

Eric Kim is a New York Times staff writer and essayist born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. His debut cookbook, Korean American: Food That Tastes Like Home, was an instant New York Times Best Seller. 

 

Jiwon Choi is the author One Daughter is Worth Ten Sons and I Used To Be Korean. both published by Hanging Loose Press. 

 

Jinwoo Chong is the author of the novel Flux, a New York Times Editor’s Choice published in the US and UK by Melville House and named a best book of 2023 by Esquire, Apple Books, Cosmopolitan, and Goodreads.

 

Gina Chung is a Korean American writer from New Jersey currently living in New York City. She is the author of the novel Sea Change.

 

Sabina Hahn is a Brooklyn based illustrator, animator, and sculptor. Pineapple Princess is her debut picture book.

 

Lorraine Nam is an illustrator of the picture book biography Look Up With Me: Neil deGrasse Tyson: A Life Among the Stars written by Jennifer Berne.

 

Patricia Park is the author of the debut YA novel, Imposter Syndrome & Other Confessions of Alejandra Kim. 

 

Andrew Yoon is running the generative poetry focused small press, Nothing to Say.
