호러환타지 소설 '저주토끼' 작가 정보라 + 번역가 안톤 허

2023 전미도서상 번역문학 부문과 2020 영국 부커상 국제 부문 최종 후보작인 정보라 작가의 호러판타지 소설 '저주토끼(Cursed Bunny, 번역 안톤 허/허정범)' 북토크가 11월 3일 오후 6시 맨해튼 53스트릿 MoMA 건너편의 뉴욕공립도서관(18 West 53rd St.)에서 열린다. 

뉴욕한국문화원과 뉴욕공립도서관이 ‘K-호러문학 주간’의 일환으로 여는 이번 북토크에선 정보라 작가와 안톤 허 번역가가 한국의 호러문학과 번역과정에 대해 토론할 예정이다. 진행은 소설 ‘내가 너의 얼굴을 가졌더라면(If I Had Your Face, 2020)’의 작가 프랜시스 차(Frances Cha)가 맡는다. 북토크 행사는 무료지만,  문화원 홈페이지(koreanculture.org)를 통해 예약해야 한다. 

'저주토끼'는 저주와 복수, 그리고 위로에 관한 우화다. 대를 이어 저주 용품을 만드는 집안에서 태어난 손자와 그 할아버지의 이야기를 담았다. 할아버지에겐 요절한 친구가 있다. 그 친구 집안은 고위 인사 접대나 뇌물 대신 고지식하게 전통주를 양조사업을 하고 있다. 어느날 경쟁 회사에서 친구네 양조법에 공업용 알코올이 들어가서 마시면 눈이 멀고, 불구가 된다는 흑색선전을 퍼트려 사업이 그만 몰락하게 된다. 이에 주인공의 할아버지가 '저주 토끼'를 만들어 복수에 나서는데...

정보라 작가는 1976년 서울에서 태어나 연세대 인문학부를 졸업 후 예일대에서 러시아 동유럽 지역학 석사, 인디애나대에서 러시아와 폴란드 문학으로 박사학위를 받았다. 이후 연세대에서 러시아와 SF에 강의하고, 번역과 소설 작업을 해왔다. 중편 '호(狐)'로 제3회 디지털작가상 모바일 부문 우수상, 단편 '씨앗'으로 제1회 SF어워드 단편부문 우수상을 받았다. 2022년 '저주토끼(Cursed Bunny)'로 번역문학 부문인 인터내셔널 부커상(International Booker Prize) 최종 후보에 선정되었다. 2016년 한강이 '채식주의자(The Vegetarian, 번역 데보라 스미스)'으로 인터내셔널 부커상을 수상한 바 있다.

미 최고 권위의 문학상인 전미도서상(National Book Awards)는 소설/시/넌픽션/청소년 도서/ 번역문학의 5개 부문으로 나누어 시상한다. 소설 부문 수상자로는 윌리엄 포크너(1951, 1955), 사울 벨로우(1954, 1965), 필립 로스(1960, 1995), 존 업다이크(1964, 1972), 손톤 와일더(1968), 조이스 캐롤 오츠(1970), 토마스 핀천(1974), 앨리스 워커(1983), 수잔 손탁(2000) 등이 있다.

한인 작가로는 2019년 수잔 최(Susan Choi)가 '신뢰 연습(Trust Excercise)'으로 소설 부문상, 2020년 최돈미(Don Mee Choi)씨가 'DMZ 콜로니(DMZ Colony)'으로 시 부문상을 받았으며, 같은 해 유미리(Miri Yu)의 소설 '우에노역 공원 출구(Tokyo Ueno Station/ JR上野?公園口)'가 번역문학 부문상을 수상했다. 이민진은 2017년 '파친코(Pachinko)'로 소설 부문 최종 후보에 올랐다. 2023년 전미도서상은 11월 15일 발표된다.

Korean Cultural Center NY and 53rd Street Library invite you to the mysterious world of Cursed Bunny with two brilliant minds: author Bora Chung and translator Anton Hur. Published in the US for the first time, Cursed Bunny  is a Finalist for the 2023 National Book Award in Translated Literature. The Winners will be announced live on November 15, 2023. The book was also shortlisted for the 2022 International Booker Prize and won a PEN/HEIM translation grant. 

This event will be moderated by Frances Cha, critically acclaimed author of If I Had Your Face. 

Join us as they explore Bora and Anton’s writing processes along with their favorite Korean horror tales when they examine various themes with Cursed Bunny. 

Following the engaging discussion, you will have the opportunity to meet Bora Chung and Anton Hur in person along with the option to have your copy of Cursed Bunny signed. The event will be registration-based, as it is scheduled to take place after the library closes. The program will be conducted in English. 

About the Book 

Cursed Bunny is a genre-defying collection of short stories by Korean author Bora Chung and translated by the renowned Anton Hur. Blurring the lines between magical realism, horror, and science-fiction, Chung uses elements of the fantastic and surreal to address the very real horrors and cruelties of patriarchy and capitalism in modern society. 

About the Speakers

Bora Chung has written three novels and three collections of short stories. She has an MA in Russian and East European area studies from Yale University and a PhD in Slavic Literature from Indiana University. 

Anton Hur was born in Stockholm, Sweden. He won an English PEN Translates award for Kang Kyeong-ae's The Underground Village, and his translation of Sang Young Park’s Love in the Big City was longlisted for the International Booker Prize. He lives in Seoul. 

Frances Cha is the author of the novel If I Had Your Face, which was named one of the Best Books of the Year by Time Magazine, NPR, BBC and Esquire among other publications and is being translated into 11 languages. She teaches fiction at the Columbia University MFA program and lives in New York with her family. Recently, she published a children's book The Goblin Twins, a captivating tale of ancient dokkaebi’s journey from Korea to modern New York.
