2024 메트로폴리탄뮤지엄 외관(파사드) 작품을 위임받은 조각가 이불(Lee Bul)씨가 9월 12일 그레이스레이니로저스 오디토리움에서 레슬리 마(Lesley Ma) 대화의 시간을 연다. 이 대화는 9월 12일 공개될 '파사드 커미션: 이불(The Genesis Facade Commission: Lee Bul, Long Tail Halo)에 맞추어 열리는 것으로 이 커미션 작업에 대해 토론할 예정이다. 위임작은 2025년 5월 27일까지 전시된다. 이 행사는 등록이 필요하다.  

 

이불은 구상과 추상의 여러 요소를 결합한 조각 작품 4점을 제작할 예정이다. 이 프로젝트는  The Met 파사드에 전시되는 컨템포러리 커미션 시리즈로서 다섯 번째다. 이전에는 왕게치 무투(Wangechi Mutu, 2019), 캐롤 보브(Carol Bove, 2021), 휴 로크(Hew Locke, 2022), 나이리 바그라미안(Nairy Baghramian, 2023)의 작품이 전시됐다.

 

 

이불(Lee Bul)

이불은 드로잉, 조각, 회화, 퍼포먼스, 설치 미술, 비디오 아트를 포함한 다양한 매체를 통해 아름다움, 욕망, 부패, 쇠퇴의 주제를 탐구하는 조각가이다. The Met의 파사드 커미션은 2002년 뉴욕의 New Museum에서 열렸던 개인전 이후 미국에서의 첫 대규모 프로젝트이다. 이불은 1999년 제48회 베니스 비엔날레에서 한국을 대표하였으며 2019년에는 한국에서 호암 예술상을 수상했다. 

 

1980년대 말 서울과 도쿄에서 패브릭 조각 작품을 직접 입고 선보였던 획기적인 퍼포먼스 이후 작가는 현대 조각 및 설치 미술의 선구자로 널리 알려지게 되었다. 이불은 자연과 인공의 경계를 흐리며, 감각적이지만 파편화된, 친숙한 듯 낯선 형태의 조각과 설치적 풍경으로 가장 잘 알려져 있다. 이러한 드라마틱한 구성은 우리에게 익숙한 형태를 변형시킴으로써 완벽에 집착하는 발전 중심의 가치관을 비판한다. 구조적으로나 시각적으로 복잡한 형태의 작품은 유토피아적인 비전의 열망과 실패를 탐구하며 역사의 취약성과 멜랑콜리를 드러낸다.

For the 2024 Genesis Facade Commission, South Korean artist Lee Bul (born 1964, Yeongju, based in Seoul) has created four new sculptures that combine figurative and abstract elements. The Genesis Facade Commission: Lee Bul, Long Tail Halo is the artist’s first major project in the United States in more than twenty years and the fifth in the series of contemporary commissions for The Met Fifth Avenue’s facade niches.

 

With a career that spans four decades, Lee is widely recognized as the preeminent artist from South Korea. She is known for her sophisticated use of both highly industrial and labor-intensive materials, incorporating artisanal practices as well as technological advancements into her work. Her sculptures, often evoking bodily forms that are at once classical and futuristic, address the aspirations and disillusions that come with progress.

 

The Genesis Facade Commission is part of The Met’s series of contemporary commissions in which the Museum invites artists to create new works of art, establishing a dialogue between the artist’s practice, The Met collection, the physical Museum, and The Met’s audiences.

#29 K-Art: The Revival of the Korean Monochrome Painting  

In the 2010s, the global art community experienced a renaissance in Korean monochrome abstraction known as 'Dansaekhwa.' Monochromatic painters, who emerged during Korea's era of dictatorship in the 1970s, now find themselves in their prime during the twilight of their careers. I explored the history of Dansaekhwa and the masters such as the late Yun Hyong-keun, late Chung Chang-sup, late Park Seo-Bo and Chung Sang-Hwa, Ha Chong Hyun. Special exhibitions of Korean art are continuing at major art museums in the United States such as the Metropolitan Museum, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum. Furthermore, Seoul has now emerged as a global art mecca.
