런던의 로열아카데미오브아트(Royal Academy of Art)에서 2024년 9월 20일부터 2025년 1월 18일까지 미국 화가 케리 제임스 마샬(Kerry James Marshall) 회고전이 열린다. 마샬의 70세 생일을 기해 열리는 이 회고전에선 약 70여점이 소개된다. 전시는 로열아카데미, 쥐리히 현대미술관(Kunsthaus Zurich), 파리현대미술관(Musée d'Art Moderne, Paris)이 공동으로 기획했다. https://www.royalacademy.org.uk
케리 제임스 마샬은 백인 중심의 서양 미술에 도전, 흑인들의 일상을 통해서 역사, 문화, 정체성, 인권운동을 탐구해왔다. 마샬은 1955년 알라바마 버밍햄에서 태어나 로스앤젤레스에서 성장했다. 오티스칼리지 졸업 후 시카고로 이주해 일리노이대 아트앤디자인스쿨에서 가르쳤다. 인권운동과 미국에서 흑인으로 산다는 것, 블랙파워 등을 테마로 벽화 사이즈의 대규모 작업을 해왔다.
1997년 맥아더재단 천재상을 수상했으며, 2003년 베니스 영화제에서 전시했다. 2016년 메트로폴리탄뮤지엄의 현대미술관 메트 브로이어(Met Breuer)에서 대규모 회고전 'Kerry James Marshall: Mastry'를 열었다. 그는 배우 셰릴 린 브루스(Cheryl Lynn Bruce)와 시카고에서 살며 작업하고 있다.
In September 2025, the Royal Academy of Arts will mark the 70th birthday year of the celebrated American artist Kerry James Marshall Hon RA with a major solo exhibition. The exhibition will explore Marshall’s expansive career to date and it will be his first institutional presentation in the UK for almost 20 years.
Kerry James Marshall will feature around 70 works, including a new series of paintings made especially for the show and his commemorative sculpture Wake, 2003 - ongoing, which evolves each time it is exhibited.
Marshall enhances the presence of Black figures in paintings built on principles codified in the tradition of Western picture making, which he encountered in books and museums available during his childhood. He places Black bodies front and centre in his lyrical, frequently large-scale figurative paintings and murals.
Marshall’s work is informed by his own memories, art historical styles and genres, contemporary culture and science fiction, among other points of reference. He uses these to comment on the past, celebrate everyday life, and imagine more optimistic futures.
