OUT at the Movies
This fall, the Museum of Arts and Design presents OUT at the Movies, a cinema series to accompany the exhibition OUT of the Jewelry Box. Inspired by the exhibition's focus on queer perspectives expressed in art jewelry, the series draws attention to the role of film in the construction of LGBTQ+ stories. The exhibition's experimental approaches to art jewelry and themes of Affirmations of Queer Desire, Contemporary Events and Issues, Imaginary Worlds and Wonderous Forms are mirrored in the selected films. Screenings will be accompanied by Q&A with guest speakers including directors, film crew, and film historians.
Happy Together
Tue, Sep 24 / 6:30 pm
Wong Kar Wai’s dreamy and emotional portrait of queer love follows couple Lai and Ho who move from Hong Kong to Argentina in search of a better life. Being emotionally, culturally, and financially stranded in a foreign land puts pressure on their relationship, locking the couple in an intense emotional cycle of desire and jealousy, splitting up and reconciling. Happy Together comes only 6 years after the decriminalization of homosexuality in Hong Kong and at the cusp of Hong Kong’s handover, marking a period of rapid politization and rise in social movements. Through intensely saturated, intimate and dizzying cinematography, Happy Together brings us through the turbulent highs and lows of love’s extremes.
The Fly
Tue, Oct 22 / 6:30 pm
Upon the creation of a teleportation device, a scientist decides to test its abilities on himself, unknowingly trapping a housefly with him. He soon learns that his experiment has gone wrong, as the fly’s cells take over his body, slowly transforming him into a human-insect hybrid. Director David Cronenberg combines grotesque body horror with romantic tragedy as the film’s protagonist grapples with disconnects between his body and mind, drawing themes of aging, disease and emotional impact of bodily deterioration on loved ones.
Funeral Parade of Roses

Set against the backdrop of 1960s underground Tokyo nightlife, Funeral Parade of Roses loosely adapts Oedipus Rex as it follows Eddie, a bar hostess who ignites a love-triangle with the club’ owner and reigning drag queen Leda. In this pop- art kaleidoscopic vision, avant-garde aesthetics, narrative drama and experimental documentary are blended as it creates a groundbreaking look into Japan’s queer subcultures.
