Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition [BWAC] Announces Salon des Refusés 2024:
An Exhibition Showcasing Artwork Rejected from Brooklyn Museum Open Call
In February 2024, the Brooklyn Museum announced an open call for artwork for an upcoming exhibition celebrating the institution’s 200th anniversary. Brooklyn-based artists were invited to submit artwork for consideration for The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition, “an exhilarating major group show that will illuminate the unparalleled breadth and depth of talent in our borough.”
On August 2nd, artists were notified whether their submissions were accepted for the exhibit. Thousands of artists applied to this exciting opportunity, however due to limited space, only few were accepted. In light of the many artists whose artwork was not selected for the Brooklyn Museum exhibition, BWAC Gallery has decided to host a Salon des Refusés 2024 group show to showcase some of these works. This exhibit will unite and uplift our artist community as well as complement the Brooklyn Museum show.
BWAC announced an open call for the Salon des Refusés 2024 exhibit on August 7th. Artists who received a rejection letter for The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition were invited to exhibit their originally submitted artwork at BWAC instead. The number of submissions for the BWAC exhibition was capped at 200 artists.
The original Salon des Refusés took place in 1863 when the Paris Salon held its annual exhibition of academic arts. Thousands of artists applied but were rejected and were unable to display their work in the official Salon exhibition. It was determined that their work did not fulfill academic standards of the time. Emperor Napoleon III, who wanted the public to make the decision, organized a simultaneous exhibition of all the rejects in the Palace of Industry. This exhibition included artists such as Manet, Cezanne, Pissarro and Whistler. The exhibition of “rejects” became famously known as the Salon des Refusés 1863.
“As artists, we are very grateful for having the opportunity to submit a work to be exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum,” said Janet Morgan, co-curator of BWAC’s Salon des Refusés 2024. “Still, artists want to exhibit their works, so BWAC is giving them that opportunity.”
About BWAC:
The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. Our mission is to help artists develop professionally and deliver programs that connect art to community in innovative, inclusive, and impactful ways.
Our 25,000 square foot gallery space spans two floors of a historic warehouse on the Brooklyn Waterfront in Red Hook. This magnificent space affords our artist-members and partner organizations opportunities to exhibit and sell their work in both juried and member shows throughout the year.
Community is important to us, whether that’s our members supporting one another or BWAC partnering with allied arts groups such as Art Yard Bklyn, Red Hook Open Studios, BCAT, and community resources like the Red Hook Public Library. We strive to make the experience of art accessible to all through classes and workshops, gallery talks, and performance events that are inexpensive or free.
Organized in 1978 by sixteen artists looking for a place to exhibit, BWAC has grown to become Brooklyn’s largest artist-run organization. We take pride in our all-volunteer operation, where our artist-members serve as management, leadership, and board. https://www.bwac.org
OPEN CALL
The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition presents its very own Salon des Refusés 2024.
In 1863, the Paris Salon held its annual exhibition of academic arts. Thousands of artists applied but were rejected and
were unable to display their work in the official Salon exhibition. It was decided that their work did not fulfill academic
standards of the time. Emperor Napoleon III, who wanted the public to make the decision, organized a simultaneous
exhibition in the Palace of Industry for the artists that had been rejected. This exhibition included artists such as Manet,
Cezanne, Pissarro and Whistler. The exhibition became famously known as the Salon des Refusés 1863.
Commemorating history, the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition invites Brooklyn artists who have received rejection
notifications from the much anticipated "Brooklyn Artists Exhibition" at Brooklyn Museum to exhibit at our gallery...as it
was then...let the public decide.
Welcome to Brooklyn's Salon des Refuses 2024, an art show at BWAC.
