수퍼스타 돌리 파튼의 수줍은 남편 칼 딘(Carl Dean)

남편이 반했던 은행원에서 영감받은 '졸린(Jolene)' 히트

이 세상의 모든 사람들이 무대 체질이거나, 유명인을 꿈꾸지는 않는다. 소박하게 그림자 속에서 평온을 느끼는 사람들도 있다. 

 

수퍼스타 컨트리 가수 돌리 파튼(Dolly Parton, 79)과 60년 가까이 살아온 남편 칼 딘(Carl Dean, 82)이 3월 3일 세상을 떠났다고 뉴욕타임스가 전했다. 칼 딘이 주목을 받는 것은 아내의 명성에 기대지 않고 평생 그림자 속에서 도로포장 사업을 하며 평범하게 잉꼬 부부로 살았다는 점이다.

 

로큰롤의 팬이었던 칼 딘은 1964년 내쉬빌의 세탁소 밖에서 미래의 수퍼스타를 처음 만났다. 파튼은 18세, 딘은 21세였다. 2년 후 메모리얼 데이에 조지아주 링골드에서 돌리 파튼의 엄마, 목사와 사모가 참석한 가운데 결혼식을 올렸다.

잉꼬부부였지만, 남편이 한눈을 판적도 있었다. '졸린(Jolene)'은 아름다운 빨간 머리에 다릭 긴 은행원에게 반한 남편이 은행에서 노닥거리는 것을 알고 작곡한 곡이다. "졸린, 졸린, 졸린, 졸린, 제발 부탁인네 내 남자를 데려가지 마세요" 1973년 발표된 이 곡은 빌보드 컨트리 차트에서 1위를 차지했다. 돌리 파튼은 2019년 그래미상 시상식에서 양녀 마일리 사이러스와 '졸린'을 듀엣으로 불렀다. 

 

러브 발라드 "From Here to the Moon and Back"도 남편으로부터 영감을 받은 곡이다. 파튼은 남편이 자신의 삶을 안정시키는 힘 중 하나였다. 신께서 칼 딘을 주셨고, 그는 내가 필요로 하는 완벽한 사람이었다"고 밝혔다. 

 

돌리 파튼과 칼 딘 부부는 2016년 결혼 50주년에 서약을 갱신했다. 둘 사이에 자식은 없다. 

 

뉴욕타임스 독자 Blanche White(사우스캐롤라이나)는 "딘 씨는 가장 좋은 사람처럼 들린다. 스스로 생각하고, 자신이 원하는 것을 알고, 열심히 일하면서 점점 더 지배적이고 만연해지는 세상의 얄팍한 부분에 끌리지 않는 사람이다"라고 댓글을 올렸다.
