프랑스 작가 마르셀 프루스트(Marcel Proust, 1871-1922)의 대하소설 '잃어버린 시간을 찾아서(À la recherche du temps perdu/ In Search of Lost Time)'를 한국어로 낭독하며 읽는 독서 모임이 4월 7일부터 11월 3일까지 매주 월요일 오후 8시 온라인으로 열린다. 

 

그리니치빌리지의 뉴욕공립도서관 제퍼슨마켓 지부(425 Avenue of the Americas) 내 프루스트 센터(The Proust Center at Jefferson Market NYPL)와 케이+프루스티안스(K+Proustians)가 공동으로 주최하는 이 독서 모임은 마르셀 프루스트의 '잃어버린 시간을 찾아서' 중 '스완네 집 쪽(Du côté de chez/ Swann/ Swann's Way, 1913)'을 45분씩 함께 소리내어 낭독하고, 15분간 생각을 공유하게 된다. 모임에서 낭독할 책은 민음사가 프루스트 사망 100주년인 2022년에 출판한 한국외국어대 김희영 교수 번역의 '잃어버린 시간을 찾아서' 1편 1권, 2권  '스완네 집 쪽으로'다. 

 

프루스트의 자전적 소설 '잃어버린 시간을 찾아서'는 유년의 추억, 가슴 시린 사랑, 전쟁, 노화, 소명 등을 의식의 흐름으로 다룬 작품으로 집필에만 14년이 걸렸으며, 분량은 4천여 페이지에 달한다. 1부 '스완네 집 쪽으로'(1913년 출간), 2부 '스완의 사랑' (1919),  3부 '게르망트 쪽'(1920), 4부 '소돔과 고모라'(1922), 그리고 사후에 출간된 '갇힌 여인'(1923), 6부 '사라진 알베르틴'(1925), 7부 '되찾은 시간' (1927)으로 구성됐다. 2부는 '양철북'의 폴커 슐렌도르프 감독이 제레미 아이언스, 알랑 들롱, 오르넬라 무티, 화니 아르당 주연의 '스완의 사랑(Un Amour de Swann, 1984)'으로 영화화됐다.  

 

E.M. 포스터(전망 좋은 방)은 '잃어버린 시간을 찾아서'에 대해 "'전쟁과 평화' 다음으로 가장 위대한 소설", 버지니아 울프(자기만의 방)는 “진정으로 내게 가장 큰 체험은 프루스트다. 이 책이 있는데 과연 무엇을 앞으로 쓸 수 있단 말인가?”, 시몬 드 보부아르(제 2의 성)는 “한없이 다시 읽고 또 읽고 싶은 작품”이라 평했다. '잃어버린 시간을 찾아서'는 천천히 반복해서 읽어야 문장의 맛을 느낄 수 있는 작품으로 꼽힌다.

We invite you to a unique reading group, where we read Proust aloud in Korean. 

It is offered in coordination with the Proust Center at Jefferson Market Library (NYPL) and the “K+Proustians.”

 

One of the best ways to read Marcel Proust's " In Search of Lost Time / Swann’s Way" is reading together and aloud.  If you are interested in reading Proust's masterpiece, this is the easiest way to start your reading and to keep your interest alive. In addition, encountering other readers' perspectives and voices may further inspire your reading. 

 

We will weekly read aloud together for 45 minutes and share our thoughts for 15 minutes. We will use Professor Kim Hi-Young’s remarkable translation of “In Search of Lost Time Volume 1-1, 2 / Swann’s Way,” published by Minumsa in 2022, a 100th anniversary year of Proust's death.
