피아니스트 안드라스 쉬프 경(Sir András Schiff, 71)이 3월 19일 2025-26 시즌 미국 콘서트를 전격 취소했다. 

 

취소 공연엔 카네기홀 리사이틀(10/22, 2025), LA 필하모닉의 디즈니 콘서트홀 리사이틀(10/26, 2025), 뉴욕필하모닉 데이빗게펜홀 리사이틀(5/21-23, 2026),  필라델피아 오케스트라 (5/7-9, 2026) 등을 포함한다. 

 

쉬프 경은 보도자료를 통해 오늘 미국 내 정치적 변화에 대응해 다음 시즌 콘서트를 취소한다고 밝혔다. 그는 어떤 이들은 "그냥 입 다물고 연주나 해"라고 말할지도 모릅니다. 저는 양심상 그렇게 할 수 없습니다. 우리는 예술이 사회의 영향을 받지 않는 상아탑에 살고 있지 않습니다. 예술과 정치, 예술과 사회는 분리될 수 없습니다. 따라서 예술가로서 우리는 이 세상의 공포와 불의에 반응해야 합니다. 우리는 1930년대 유럽만큼 최근의 역사에서 아무것도 배우지 못했을까요? 아마도 그렇지 않을 것입니다."라고 밝혔다.

 

그는 이어 "미국 국민은 말했고 우리는 그들의 말을 들었습니다. 맞습니다. 실제로 "마을에 새로운 보안관이 있습니다." 이로 인해 매우 다른 "마을"이 되었습니다. 우리 중 일부는 더 이상 방문하고 싶어하지 않습니다. 더 이상 의무적이지 않습니다."라며 도날드 트럼프 행정부에 대해 은유적으로 비판했다.

 

쉬프 경은 "여러분의 우정과 지속적인 지원에 감사드립니다. 더 나은 시대에 대한 희망을 포기하지 맙시다."라고 소견을 맺었다. 

 

 

 

안드라스 쉬프 경은 1953년 헝가리 부다페스트의 유대인 가정에서 태어났다. 아버지는 제 2차 세계대전 때 군의관으로 징집되었고, 첫 부인과 아들은 아우슈비츠에서 사망했다. 나치 점령하에서 살아남은 친부는 쉬프가 6살 때 사망했다. 피아니스트 어머니의 영향으로 다섯살 때부터 피아노를 시작, 프란츠리스트아카데미와 런던에서 공부했다.

 

1974년 차이코프스키 피아노 콩쿠르에서 4위, 1975년 리즈 콩쿠르에서 공동 3위를 차지했다. 1979년 헝가리에서 이주한 후 1987년 오스트리아 시민권을 취득했다. 1999년 실내악단 Cappella Andrea Barca를 창단했다. 2014년 엘리자베스 여왕으로부터 기사 작위를 받았다.

 

쉬프 경은 공개적으로 정치적인 목소리를 내왔다. 2011년 워싱턴포스트에 "헝가리가 유럽연합 이사회의 순회 의장국을 맡을 준비와 자격에 대해 의문을 제기하는 편지를 기고했다. 헝가리 빅토르 오르반(Viktor Orbán) 행정부의 인종차별, 로마인에 대한 차별, 반유대주의, 외국인 혐오증, 쇼비니즘, 반동적 민족주의와 최근 통과된 미디어 법률에 대한 비판이었다.

 

닷새 후 독일 프랑크푸르트 알게마이네 자이퉁지에 자신이 헝가리에서 "불가피한 인물'이 되었으며, 아마도 다시는 헝가리에서 공연하거나 심지어는 방문하지도 않을 것이라고 밝혔다. 그의 발언은 헝가리 민족주의자들의 공격을 받았다.

 

쉬프 경은 오스트리아에서 극우가 비상하는 것에 대해 논평하며 오스트리아 시민권을 포기하고 2001년 영국 시민권을 취득했다. 그는 일본계 바이올리니스트 시오가와 유코(Yūko Shiokawa, 塩川 悠子)와 결혼했다. 

 

 

 

Pianist Sir András Schiff Cancels U.S. Appearances for 2025-2026 Season

 

New York, NY: March 19, 2025 –The world-renowned pianist, conductor, pedagogue and lecturer Sir András Schiff announced today that he has cancelled his concerts in the U.S. for the 2025-2026 season in response to political changes in the United States, issuing the following statement:  

 

Dear Friends, Colleagues and Music Lovers,

 

Due to the recent and unprecedented political changes in the United States, I feel morally obligated to withdraw from all engagements in the U.S. for the 2025-2026 season.  This is not an easy decision to make.  Since the 1970’s the U.S. has been very important in my life, including the many years I lived in New York City.  There have been hundreds of concerts and wonderful experiences with excellent orchestras and musicians.  Some of my closest friends live in the States.  I have a great deal for which to be thankful.

 

Some people might say, “just shut up and play.”  I cannot, in good conscience, do that. We do not live in an ivory tower where the arts are untouched by society. Arts and politics, arts and society are inseparable. Therefore, as artists, we must react to the horrors and injustices of this world.  Have we learned nothing from the course of history -- as recently as Europe in the 1930s? Perhaps not. 

 

The American people have spoken – and we have heard them. Yes, indeed, there is a “new sheriff in town.”  Which has made it a very different “town” -- one that some of us no longer wish to visit.  It is no longer obligatory. 

 

Thank you for your friendship and continued support.  Let’s not give up hope for better times.

 

The cancelled concerts include a recital tour scheduled for October 2025 and orchestral engagements with the Philadelphia Orchestra and New York Philharmonic, scheduled for May 2026. 

 

 

András Schiff bio

Sir András Schiff is world-renowned as a pianist, conductor, pedagogue and lecturer.  Born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1953, Sir András studied piano at the Liszt Ferenc Academy with Pal Kadosa, György Kurtág, and Ferenc Rados; and in London with George Malcolm.

 

He has performed cycles of complete Beethoven sonatas and the complete works of J.S. Bach, Haydn, Schubert and Bartók, which constitute an important part of his work.  Having collaborated with the world’s leading orchestras and conductors, he now focuses primarily on solo recital, play-conducting appearances, and exclusive conducting projects. In the 2022-2023 season, he was named Artist-In-Residence by the New York Philharmonic, with whom he performed nine concerts. His Bach has become an annual highlight at the BBC Proms, and he regularly performs at the Verbier, Salzburg and Baden-Baden Festivals as well as Wigmore Hall. 

 

Vicenza is home to Cappella Andrea Barca, his own chamber orchestra founded in 1999, comprised of international soloists, chamber musicians and friends. He curates an annual festival in Vicenza at the Teatro Olimpico. Sir András enjoys close relationships with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Budapest Festival Orchestra, and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. In 2018 he accepted the role of Associated Artist with the OAE, complementing his interest in performing on period keyboard instruments.

 

With a prolific discography, he established an exclusive relationship in 1997 with producer Manfred Eicher and ECM New Series. Highlights have included the complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas recorded live from Zurich; solo recitals of Schubert, Schumann and Janáček; and J.S. Bach’s Partitas, Goldberg Variations, and Well-Tempered Clavier. His most recent release features Brahms and Schumann Violin Sonatas with Yuuko Shiokawa, released in late 2024.

 

Sir András Schiff’s many honors include the International Mozarteum Foundation’s Golden Medal (2012), Germany’s Great Cross of Merit with Star (2012), the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Gold Medal (2013), a Knighthood for Services to Music (2014) and a Doctorate from the Royal College of Music (2018). He was awarded the Jean Gimbel Lane Prize in Piano Performance in 2021 from The Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University. In 2024, he received the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art as well as the Bösendorfer Ring.
