TWO MASTER OF WINE STUDENTS AWARDED IWSC SCHOLARSHIPS
LONDON, UK, 31 MARCH 2025 — The IWSC (International Wine and Spirit Competition) has awarded scholarships to two Master of Wine (MW) students. Ian Casterton of Vancouver, Canada, and Kyung eun Aum of San Jose, US, will each receive £5,000 to contribute towards their studies.
The IWSC has awarded scholarships to students on the Master of Wine programme annually since 2018. This year, applicants for the award were asked to write an 800-word article dedicated to a person, place or drink that helped ignite their passion for wine. In addition to the scholarship, the two winners will see their article published online by IWSC’s sister publication, Club Oenologique.
Christelle Guibert, Chief Executive Officer, Fine Wine and Spirits at the Conversion Group, said: “We're delighted to support Ian and Kyung eun on their Master of Wine journeys. Their passion and unique perspectives enrich our global community, and we're proud to invest in their future contributions to the wine industry. Congratulations to both on this well-deserved achievement.”
Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW) Executive Director Julian Gore-Booth added: “We are hugely grateful to the IWSC for their continuing support of MW students. Fulfilling the demands of the Master of Wine programme is a significant financial commitment, and the generosity of IWSC is a true investment in some of the wine world’s most promising rising stars.”
Ian’s passion for wine began around the dinner table, inspired by food, wine and the people who produce them. He has crafted wine programs for top restaurant groups and brings a unique industry perspective from roles in fine dining, portfolio management and production. Named 2024 Best Sommelier of British Columbia, he holds the WSET Diploma and is preparing for the MW exam. He also judges, teaches WSET, and moderates industry workshops.
On receiving the scholarship, Ian commented: "I'm grateful to the IWSC for the support in this wild and rewarding endeavour. Also thank you for the thought-provoking essay topic. What a nostalgic, even cathartic, exercise! Truly, thank you."
Kyung eun’s love affair with wine began as “love at first sight” in her early 20s. Captivated by its sophistication, she quickly developed a deep appreciation for the global wine culture and began a career in the wine industry, gaining extensive experience in brand marketing and leading wine seminars. She earned the WSET Diploma in 2018 and now lives in San Jose, California, working as a wine instructor and columnist.
On receiving the scholarship, Kyung eun said, "I am so grateful and honoured to receive the IWSC Foundation Scholarship. It felt like I was traveling back in time while writing the essay. I will cherish this scholarship and do my best to make the most of this opportunity."
