영국 웨스트엔드에서 공연된 뮤지컬 '벤자민 버튼의 호기심 많은 케이스(The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)가 2025 로렌스 올리비에상(Laurence Olivier Award) 시상식에서 최우수 신작 뮤지컬상을 수상했다. '지붕 위의 바이올린(Fiddler on the Roof)'는 최우수 리바이벌상을 받았다.
올해엔 한국의 국립창극단의 창극(*唱劇, 여러 가객들이 무대에서 판소리 조로 연기하는 한국의 오페라) '리어(Lear)를 연출한 정영두(Jung Young-doo)씨가 탁월한 오페라 성취(Outstanding achievement in opera) 부문에 올랐었다. 메조 소프라노 아이굴 아크메스쉬나(Aigul Akhmetshina, 카르멘), 테너 알란 클레이턴(Alan Clayton, Festen)과 함께 노미네이트됐으며, 트로피는 클레이턴이 받아갔다. '리어'는 셰익스피어의 비극 '리어왕'을 한국의 소리로 각색한 창극으로 지난해 10월 런던 바비칸센터에서 주영한국문화원의 'K-뮤직 페스티벌' 개막작으로 공연됐다.

또한, 탁월한 무용 성취(Outstanding achievement in dance) 부문에선 코리안 아메리칸 발레 댄서 사라 천(Sarah Chun)이 '3개의 소품 발레 (Three Short Ballets)'로 후보에 올랐었다. 이 부문에는 'Angels’ Atlas'의 조명 디자이너 톰 비써(Tom Visser)와 'Yerbagüena'의 플라멩코 댄서 에바 에르바부에나(Eva Yerbabuena)와 함께 후보로 지명됐으며, 에르바부에나가 수상했다.
시카고에서 태어난 사라 천은 조프리 발레(Joffrey Ballet Academy of Chicago), 오클라호마시티발레, 캔사스시티발레를 거쳐 2016년 영국의 노던발레(Northern Ballet)로 이적해 솔로이스트로 활동 중이다.
한편, 미국의 토니상(Tony Awards)는 브로드웨이 공연 작품을 대상으로 한다. 지난해 6월 열린 제 77회 토니상 시상식에선 한인 의상디자이너 린다 조(Linda Cho)가 신춘수씨가 단독으로 제작한 뮤지컬 ‘위대한 개츠비(The Great Gatsby)’로 두번째 트로피를 거머쥐었다. 린다 조는 2014년 '신사의 사랑과 살인 가이드(A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder)'로 첫 토니를 받았었다. 조명디자인상 부문에서는 '아웃사이더즈(The Outsiders)'의 하나 S. 김(Hana S. Kim, 김수연)과 브라이언 맥드비트(Brian MacDevitt) 팀이 수상했다. 또, 최우수 연극상을 수상한 '입체음향(Stereophonic)'의 조명 디자이너 장지연씨도 토니 후보에 올랐지만, Jane Cox, 'Appropriate'의 제인 콕스에 밀려났다.

국립창극단의 "리어왕"이 관심을 당깁니다. 우리 고유의 음악인 판소리를 응용해서 셰익스피어의 대작을 창극으로 만든 작가의 아이디어에 박수를 보냅니다. 50년대에 우리나라에도 김경애 임춘앵같은 국악인들이 판소리와 창극을 했습니다.
김경애 햇님국극단이 하는 창극 "마의 태자"를 서대문에 있는 동양극장에서 보고 눈물을 흘렸던 기억이 납니다. 그때 나는 사춘기를 힘겹게 겪었던 것 같아요. 그당시 국악인들은 판소리를 비롯해서 한국고전 무용, 부채춤을 무대에서 사뿐사뿐 날듯이 추었던 같습니다. 그리고, 그 국악이 60년대에 와서는 극장무대에서 사라졌습니다. 컬빗이 나의 사춘기 시절을 머리 속에서 꺼내게해서 행복한 미소를 지었습니다.
