부인 유미 호건(김유미) 여사의 중재 효과
Twitter 래리 호건 메릴랜드 주지사가 한국에서 코로나19 검사 50만회 진단 키트를 확보한 배경에 한국계 부인 유미 호건(김유미) 여사가 힘이 된 것으로 알려졌다고 뉴욕타임스, 워싱턴 포스트, CNN 등이 일제히 보도했다.
래리 호건 주지사는 검사키트 입수를 발표하면서 문재인 대통령을 비롯, 특히 메릴랜드주의 퍼스트 레이디인 자신의 부인 유미 호건 여사에게도 감사의 뜻을 피력했다. 유미 호건 여사는 미국 최초의 한국계 주지사 부인이다.
1959년 전북 나주에서 8남매 중 막내로 태어난 김유미 여사는 결혼 후 남편과 미국으로 이주, 하와이, 텍사스, 캘리포니아에서 살았다. 세 자녀를 두고 이혼한 후 1990년대 초 메릴랜드로 이주해서는 캐셔로 일했다. 2001년 콜롬비아의 한 미술전에서 래리 호건을 만나 2004년 결혼했다.
래리 호건의 조언으로 메릴랜드 미대와 아메리칸대학원에서 미술을 전공했다. 유미 호건 여사는 한지에 수목화로 추상 풍경화를 그려왔으며, 메릴랜드아동병원에 미술치료 프로그램을 마련했다.
2015년 래리 호건이 제 62대 메릴랜드 주지사에 당선되면서 주의 퍼스트레이디가 됐으며, 2018년 재선에서 압도적인 승리를 거두었다. 유미 호건 여사는 메릴랜드미대에 출강도 하고 있다. 첫남편과 사이에 세 자녀를 두었다.
