재즈 바이올리니스트 박유진씨가 이끄는 유진박 쿼텟(Yoojin Park Quartet)이 10월 27일 오후 7시 브루클린 윌리엄스의 내셔널 소더스트(National Sawdust, 80 N 6th St, Brooklyn)에서 콘서트를 연다.  이 콘서트는 코로나19과 아시안 증오 범죄로 힘든 시간을 겪은 한인들을 위해 마련된 것이다. 콘서트는 무료이나 예약(RSVP)을 해야 한다.  

 

박유진 쿼텟은 박씨를 비롯 빅터 굴드(Victor Gould, 피아노), 로니 플랙시코(Lonnie Plaxico, 베이스), 알란 매드나드(Allan Mednard, 드럼)로 구성됐다. 이날 콘서트엔 색소폰주자 티본 페니콧(Tivon Pennicott)이 특별 출연한다. 티본 페니콧이 녹음에 참가한 에스페란자 스폴딩(Esperanza Spalding)과 그레고리 포터(Gregory Porter)의 2개 앨범은 그래미상을 수상했다. 박유진 쿼텟과 티본 페니콧은 바이올린이 리드하는 재즈로 편곡한 한국 민요, 재즈와 클래식을 병합한 박씨의 자작곡을 연주할 예정이다.   

 

박유진씨는 한국예술종합학교에서 클래식 바이올린을 전공한 후 재즈 뮤지션으로 선회, 보스턴의 버클리음대에서 재즈 바이올린 퍼포먼스를 전공했다. 퀸즈대학원에서 석사를 마친후 2013년 유니버설 뮤직 코리아에서 데뷔 앨범 '웨스트 엔드(West End)'를 발매했다. 이후 블루 노트, 락우드 뮤직홀, 스몰, 재즈 갤러리등 재즈클럽에서 밴드를 이끌고 활동하고 있다. 2015년엔 뉴욕한국문화원의 '오픈 스테이지(Open Stage)에서 공연했다.

박유진씨는 "아시안 증오 범죄로 상쳐받은 우리 한인들에 선사할수있는 무료 공연을 주최할수있게 도움을 준 City Artist Corps 에게 감사하며, 상처받은 우리 한인들의 마음을 치유할수있는 음악으로 모든 인종이 단합하고 사랑할 수 있는 힐링 콘서트를 선사하겠다"라고 말했다.

 

이번 콘서트는 내셔널 소더스트가 10월 25일부터 28일까지 New York City Artist Corps의 그랜트 수상자 12인을 초대해 여는 프로그램이다. 27일엔 박유진 쿼텟, 라이언 맥브라이드 트리오(Ryan McBride Trio), James Kennedy's And Then He Painted the Sky 등 세팀의 콘서트가 열린다. 

 

콘서트는 무료이며 RSVP 사전 예약은 내셔널 쏘우더스트 홈페이지 live.nationalsawdust.org 에서 할 수 있다.

In the midst of all of the Asian hate crimes throughout the US, Yoojin has been inspired to hold an event that helps to bring awareness, encourage and unite the Asian community in particular. Music is a powerful aspect of the Asian community's value within New York City. The event will have resources available for anyone who needs additional support dealing with the social anxiety of going out and enjoying themselves. The music will be presented as a quartet, violin- Yoojin Park, bass- Lonnie Plaxico, drums- Allan Mednard, piano- Victor Gould and featuring Tivon Pennicott on Saxophone. She has composed several songs that consist of Asian traditional folk, classical and jazz. This will be a great opportunity for me to encourage the members of my community to go out and enjoy themselves freely with a free show on Oct 27th at 7 PM at National Sawdust in Brooklyn.

 

Yoojin is a New York City-based violinist and composer from South Korea. She’s a Universal Music Group International artist with her album release West End and has been performing her music from her album with her band in NYC such as Blue Note Jazz Club, Rockwood Music Hall, Smalls and Jazz Gallery. In 2019 on World Violin Day, Blue Note celebrated Yoojin by stating, “Today we celebrate violinists who have slayed the stage at Blue Note” along with two other violinists. She has toured with DJ KSHMR at Ultra Korea, Ultra Singapore, Sunburn Festival in India, and IleSoniq in Montreal. She has also worked with pop artists, featured in music videos and recordings with artists such as YUNGBLUD and Madison Beer and also has performed with Josh Groban, Sarah Brightman, Debora Cox and many more. She’s worked with many jazz musician greats and has performed at the Jazz Foundation of America’s Bird Call Show celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Charlie Parker. She has her album reviewed by popular jazz publications and blogs such as Jazztimes and All about Jazz as well as having been featured in Occhi Magazine as well as The Korea Herald.
