New York, New York, July 30, 2020 — The Queens Drive-In, a partnership between Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI), Rooftop Films, and the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI), will open on Thursday, August 13 with the New York premiere of Michael Almereyda’s Tesla, starring Ethan Hawke as the visionary inventor Nikola Tesla. Tesla, which won the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, tops the August lineup at the Drive-In. Presented by three long-standing cultural organizations, the Queens Drive-In aims to bring diverse communities together around arts and culture in a safe way, while sustaining jobs and supporting the revival of New York City. Located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, in the heart of the borough, the Drive-In will donate a portion of each ticket sale to Elmcor, a local nonprofit organization that provides support for the communities in Queens hardest hit by the pandemic. The Drive-in will continue through October.

In addition to the opening night selection, the Queens Drive-In will show the following movies in August: the documentary thriller The Last Out, capturing the journey of three Cuban baseball players aspiring to make the big leagues, directed by Sami Khan (whose short St. Louis Superman was nominated for an Academy Award) and Michael Gassert; the classic family favorite The Muppet Movie; the New York premiere of Summer White (Blanco de Verano), directed by Rodrigo Ruiz Patterson; the Academy Award–winning feature film Mad Max: Fury Road, directed by George Miller; David Osit’s Mayor, the thrilling portrait of the charismatic Christian mayor of Ramallah, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival; and Stanley Kubrick’s enduring sci-fi masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey. More titles will be announced soon.

Free film screenings presented by Queens Borough President Sharon Lee will be held at the Queens Drive-In beginning in mid-August. The full schedule of Borough President Lee’s free screenings, and other details, will be announced in the coming days.

The Queens Drive-In offers a mix of new and repertory films, plus shorts from local filmmakers and collaborations with community organizations, programmed by Rooftop Films and MoMI, with premieres presented as part of Rooftop’s 2020 summer series. The Museum's selections for the Queens Drive-In will reflect a range of MoMI's programming, including films from the established series See It Big!, revived with the theme The Future Is Now, featuring science-fiction classics that speak to the current moment; Science on Screen; Jim Henson’s World, presented in conjunction with the Museum’s ongoing exhibition and programming devoted to Jim Henson; and the launch of the series Queens on Film, showcasing movies set or filmed in the borough.

Special thanks to Queens Borough President Sharon Lee, Council Member Francisco Moya, and NYC Department of Parks and Recreation for their support of the Queens Drive-In and for making possible free community screenings. Additional thanks to NYC Comptroller Scott M. Stringer; NYC Department of Cultural Affairs; and Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, Chair of the Council’s Committee on Cultural Affairs. Tesla
THURSDAY, AUGUST 13
Michael Almereyda. 2020, 102 mins. With Ethan Hawke, Kyle McLachlan, Jim Gaffigan. Brilliant, visionary Nikola Tesla (Ethan Hawke) fights an uphill battle to bring his revolutionary electrical system to fruition, then faces thornier challenges with his new system for worldwide wireless energy. The film tracks Tesla’s uneasy interactions with his fellow inventor Thomas Edison (Kyle MacLachlan) and his patron George Westinghouse (Jim Gaffigan). Another thread traces Tesla’s sidewinding courtship of financial titan J.P. Morgan (Donnie Keshawarz), whose daughter Anne (Eve Hewson) takes a more than casual interest in the inventor. Anne analyzes and presents the story as it unfolds, offering a distinctly modern voice to this scientific period drama which, like its subject, defies convention.

The Last Out
FRIDAY, AUGUST 14
Sami Khan and Michael Gassert. 2020, 88 mins. Three young Cuban baseball players leave their families and risk exile to train in Central America and chase their dreams of playing in the Major Leagues. Filmed over more than four years, The Last Out tells the very human story of people caught between countries who want nothing more than to make a better life for their families.

Mad Max: Fury Road
SATURDAY, AUGUST 15
George Miller. Australia/South Africa, 2015, 120 mins. With Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, Nicholas Hoult. George Miller’s reboot of his legendary Mad Max series is as thrillingly unhinged and imaginative as the previous, era-defining installments. This time around, Charlize Theron’s badass war captain Imperator Furiosa flees the forces of a brutal warlord through a primitive, postapocalyptic desert wasteland, with Tom Hardy’s Max along for the ride. Taking the form of one epic chase sequence, Fury Road is a spectacle of anarchic violence and vehicular carnage that’s nearly operatic in its breathless invention. Presented as part of the MoMI series See It Big! The Future Is Now.

The Muppet Movie
SUNDAY, AUGUST 16
James Frawley. USA, 1979, 95 mins. With Jim Henson, Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson, Dave Goelz. Kermit the Frog makes his way from his humble origins in a Florida swamp to fabled Hollywood, assembling a team of friends as he goes, including Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, and Gonzo. This enchanting and clever road movie features delightful cameos from Madeline Kahn, Steve Martin, Richard Pryor, Orson Welles, and many others, and includes Kermit’s heart-tugging rendition of Paul Williams’s beloved, Oscar-nominated song “The Rainbow Connection.” Presented in conjunction with MoMI’s ongoing Jim Henson Exhibition.

Summer White (Blanco de Verano)
THURSDAY, AUGUST 20
Rodrigo Ruiz Patterson. 2020, 85 mins. Thirteen-year-old Rodrigo is a solitary teenager who finds solace in his intimate relationship with his mother, Valeria. She is his best friend, his protector, and his entire world. When her new boyfriend comes to live in their small house on the outskirts of Mexico City, however, Rodrigo finds his domain completely disrupted. He must decide if he should accept his new family or fight back and hurt the person he loves the most.

Mayor
FRIDAY, AUGUST 21
David Osit. 2020, 89 mins. Musa Hadid, the Christian mayor of Ramallah, is serving his second term in office. His immediate goals: repave the sidewalks, attract more tourism, and plan the city’s Christmas celebrations. His ultimate mission: to end the occupation of Palestine. Mayor offers a portrait of dignity amidst the madness and absurdity of endless occupation while posing the question: how do you run a city when you don’t have a country?

2001: A Space Odyssey
SUNDAY, AUGUST 30
Stanley Kubrick. USA, 1968, 149 mins. (plus intermission). With Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, Douglas Rain. As brilliantly engineered as the space program itself, Stanley Kubrick’s mysterious and profound epic—“the ultimate trip”—is about nothing less than the beauty and the banality of civilization, blending cool satire, an elaborate vision of the future, and passages of avant-garde cinematic inventiveness. Presented in conjunction with the MoMI exhibition Envisioning 2001: Stanley Kubrick’s Space Odyssey.
