Juilliard and New York Festival of Song will present "Kurt Weill's Berlin" featuring Juilliard singers and pianist Steven Blier on Thursday, January 17, in Juilliard's Peter Jay Sharp Theater. Other highlights include the Alice Tully Hall Vocal Arts Recital with alumna, soprano Hyesang Park and pianist Brian Zeger, on Thursday, November 1, in Alice Tully Hall; Juilliard Songfest, a program curated and performed by pianist Brian Zeger, featuring Juilliard singers, on Monday, February 4 in Alice Tully Hall; and the Vocal Arts Honors Recital (singers to be announced in December) on Thursday, March 21, in Alice Tully Hall. Additional vocal performances in the 2018-19 season include a "Bernstein Centennial Concert" with the Juilliard Orchestra, conducted by alumna Marin Alsop, featuring Bernstein'sSongfest with alumni soloists on Saturday, September 29, at Carnegie Hall; a concert with Juilliard415 and conductor William Christie titled "Handel in Rome I" on Monday, November 19, at the Morgan Library and "Handel in Rome II" with Juilliard415 and conductor Paul Agnew on Saturday, December 1, in Alice Tully Hall featuring Handel's Clori, Tirsi e Fileno, HWV 96; and a concert with the Juilliard Orchestra, conducted by Barbara Hannigan, that includes Sibelius' Luonnotar, featuring soprano Meghan Kasanders, on Friday, February 8, in Alice Tully Hall. Juilliard Opera 2018-19 Calendar of Events Wednesday, November 14, 2018, 7:30pm Friday, November 16, 2018, 7:30pm Sunday, November 18, 2018, 2pm Juilliard's Peter Jay Sharp Theater, 155 West 65th Street, NYC The Turn of the Screw Composer: Benjamin Britten Libretto: Myfanwy Piper, after a story by Henry James Conductor: Steven Osgood Director: John Giampietro Featuring Juilliard singers and the Juilliard Orchestra The Turn of the Screw was Britten's final chamber opera and was written in just four months in 1954. "The work is based on the novel by Henry James: a tale of good versus evil, natural versus the supernatural, possession and exorcism, set within the domestic proprieties of the English country house of Bly." (Britten-Pears Library) The opera had its world premiere with the English Opera Group, directed by Basil Coleman and conducted by Benjamin Britten, on September 14, 1954, at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. Steven Osgood is general and artistic director of the Chautauqua Opera Company. He conducted The Turn of the Screw with Opera Columbus last season, directed by Juilliard faculty member Stephen Wadsworth. Faculty member John Giampietro is a Brooklyn-based stage director of opera and theater and recently directed The Turn of the Screw at Chautauqua. At Juilliard, this past season, he directed a chamber version of Nicolai's Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor (The Merry Wives of Windsor). The opera was first performed in 1689. Avi Stein teaches continuo accompaniment in Juilliard's Historical Performance program. He also teaches vocal repertoire at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, a frequent collaborator with Juilliard. Mr. Stein is an active continuo accompanist who performs regularly with the Boston Early Music Festival, the Trinity Church Wall Street Choir and Baroque Orchestra, the Clarion Music Society, and Bach Vespers NYC. Director Mary Birnbaum is associate director of Juilliard's Artist Diploma in Opera Studies program. She was nominated for best newcomer of 2015 at the International Opera Awards in London. This past season, she directed Mozart's La finta giardiniera. Joseph Colaneri is music director of the acclaimed Glimmerglass Festival since 2013. He has served as a member of the Metropolitan Opera conducting roster since 1998. This past season, he conducted Mozart's La finta giardiniera at Juilliard. Emma Griffin, a theater and opera director, was recently appointed managing artistic director of Mannes Opera. Thursday, November 1, 2018, 7:30pm, Alice Tully Hall Alice Tully Vocal Arts Recital Hyesang Park, soprano Brian Zeger, piano Soprano Hyesang Park recently made her debut at Bayerische Staatsoper singing the role of Despina in Mozart's Così fan tutte. In the 2018-19 season, she returns to the Glyndebourne Festival as Rosina in Rossini's Barbiere di Siviglia, and she makes her role and house debut as Musetta in Barrie Kosky's new production of La bohème at the Komische Oper, Berlin, as well as her debut with the Macau International Festival as Giannetta in L'elisir d'amore. As part of her final year at the Metropolitan Opera's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, she sang the role of Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro (including the Met Broadcast) and The Dew Fairy in Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel. Ms. Park graduated from Juilliard in 2017 with an Artist Diploma in Opera Studies, and she also holds a master's degree from the school. Singers are nominated by Juilliard's voice faculty and selected by a group of distinguished judges. This season's singers and pianists will be announced in December.
