대영박물관장 소장품 도난으로 사임, 큐레이터 유물 훔쳐 이베이에 팔아 해고

세계 최대 박물관 중 하나인 런던의 대영박물관(British Museum)이 큐레이터의 절도로 관장이 사임하는 사태가 발생했다. 독일 미술사학자 출신으로 2016년부터 대영박물관의 관장(director)를 지내온 하트위그 피셔(Hartwig Fischer)는 2024년 사임할 예정이다. 이는 박물관 소장품이 속속 사라지고 있기 때문으로 알려졌다. 최근엔 5만 파운드 가치의 보물이 40파운드에 광고되며 판매 당사자로 밝혀진 그리스 컬렉션의 큐레이터 피터 히그스(Peter Higgs, 56)가 해고됐다. 피터 히그스는 대영박물관에서 35년간 일해온 베테랑 큐레이터다.
