Native Artist Jeffrey Gibson to Represent US at Venice Biennale

체로키계 인디언 원주민 아티스트 제프리 깁슨 베니스 비엔날레 미국관 대표작가 선정

촉토와 체로키계 인디언 작가 제프리 깁슨(Jeffrey Gibson, 51)이 2024 베니스 비엔날레(4/20-11/24)의 미국관 대표작가로 선정됐다. 베니스 비엔날레 미국관에 인디언 원주민 작가가 개인전을 여는 것은 최초의 일이다. 지난해 베니스 비엔날레 미국관 대표작가는 흑인 여성 조각가 시몬 리(Simon Leigh)였다. 

 

1972년 콜로라도 스프링스에서 태어난 제프리 깁슨은 국방부에서 일하는 아버지를 따라 노스캐롤라이나, 뉴저지, 독일(West Germany), 한국에서 성장했다. 1995년 시카고아트인스티튜트를 거쳐 1998년 런던의 로열칼리지오브아트에서 석사학위를 받았다.  

 

제프리 깁슨은 전통적인 원주민 구슬 장식, 직조 및 금속 세공을 통합해 문화, 역사 및 정체성에 대해 다층적으로 탐구해왔다. 음악와 나이트 클럽 이미지에서 영감을 받으며, 아프리카 펑크, 재즈, 팝, 랩, R&B, 디스코 등 다양한 장르를 들으면서 작업한다. 원주민 비즈(beads), 담요, 금속 스터드, 프린지, 징글 벨 등 혼합 매체(mixed media)를 사용한 조각과 오일 페인트와 스프레이를 결합한 컬러풀한 추상화를 제작한다.

2020년 브루클린뮤지엄에서 개인전 'Jeffrey Gibson: When Fire Is Applied to a Stone It Cracks'(2/4/2020-1/10/2021)을 열었다. 2019년엔 맥아더 펠로우로 선정됐다. 

 

동성애자인 제프리 깁슨은 런던 유학 중 만난 노르웨이 작가 룬 올센(Rune Olsen)과 결혼해 딸을 두었다.  그는 브루클린, 업스테이트 뉴욕 허드슨 저만타운에서 살며 작업하고 있다. https://www.jeffreygibson.net

베니스 비엔날레에 참가한 미국관의 첫 원주민 작가는 1932년 호피족(Hopi) 작가 프레드 카보티(Fred Kabotie)이다. 큐레이터 낸시 마리 미슬로(Nancy Marie Mithlo)는 1997년부터 2017년까지 11회에 걸쳐 세계 원주민 작가들의 전시를 열어왔다. '빨간 피부의 꿈: 베니스 비엔날레(Red Skin Dreams: La Biennale di Venezia)'는 이 전시들을 기록한 책이다.
