2019 제임스비어드재단상 후보 한인 셰프 대거 지명

'미 식당계의 오스카상'으로 불리우는 2019 제임스 비어드 재단상(James Beard Foundation Awards)에 한인 셰프들이 대거 후보로 올랐다. 


박정현씨가 운영하는 뉴욕의 한식당 아토믹스(Atomix)는 뉴욕의 프렌쳇(Frenchette)과 함께 최우수 뉴 레스토랑상(전국) 후보에 올랐으며, 최우수 레스토랑 디자인상(Studio Writers) 부문에도 노미네이트됐다. 한인 최초로 미슐랭 3스타를 받았던 샌프란시스코 베누(Benu)의 코리 리(이동민)는 최우수 셰프(전국)와 탁월한 와인 프로그램 부문 후보에도 올라 있다.

오레곤주 포틀랜드의 한식당 한옥(Han Oak)의 셰프 피터 조는 북서 지역 최우수 셰프 후보 5인에 지명되어 시애틀에서 줄(Joule)을 운영하는 레이첼 양과 세이프 치어치 커플과 경합하게 됐다. 또, 미네아폴리스 영 조니(Young Joni)의 셰프 앤 김은 중서 지역 베스트 셰프, 시카고 파라슈트(Parachute)의 비버리 김은 파트너 조니 클락과 그레이트레이크 지역 최우수 셰프 후보에 올라 있다.

한편, 켄터키주 루이빌의 610 마그놀리아와 워싱턴 DC에 '서코타시를 운영하는 셰프 에드워드 리는 NYU 영문과 출신답게 에세이 요리가 있는 에세이집 'Buttermilk Graffiti: A Chef’s Journey to Discover America’s New Melting-Pot Cuisine'으로 도서 부문 작가 후보에 올랐다. 시카고에서 어번벨리(Urbanbelly)를 운영하는 셰프 빌 김은 "Korean BBQ: Master Your Grill in Seven Sauces"으로 단일 주제 도서 부문 후보에 지명됐다.

또한, 모모푸쿠의 데이빗 장은 2018년 평창 동계올림픽의 리포터로 한식을 소개한 NBC-TV 프로그램 "Deep Dive and Food for Thought"로 탁월한 보도 부문 후보에 올랐다. 


한편, 레스토랑 리뷰 부문에는 모모푸쿠의 스타 셰프 데이빗 장에 관한 글의 저자가 2명 올라, 데이빗 장의 미국 식문화의 영향력을 보여주었다. 뉴욕타임스의 비평가 피트 웰스는 "왜 데이빗 장이 중요한가(Why David Chang Matters)" 등으로, 이터(Eater)의 빌 애디슨은 "David Chang’s Majordomo Is No Minor Feat"으로 후보에 지명됐다. 데이빗 장의 테이스팅 메뉴 레스토랑 모모푸쿠 코(Momofuku Ko)의 셰프 션 그레이는 뉴욕 최우수 셰프에 노미네이트되어 있다.

데이빗 장은 2007년 모모푸쿠 누들바로 신인요리사상, 2008년 쌈바(Ssambar)로 뉴욕 최우수 요리사상, 2009년 코(Ko)로 최우수 뉴레스토랑상을 수상했다. 2012년엔 베이커리&밀크바에서 크리스틴 토시가 최우수 신인요리사상을 받았다. 그리고, 2013년엔  최우수 요리사상을 공동 수상하면서 이상 5관왕이 됐다. 2013년  ‘미션 차이니즈 푸드(Mission Chinese Food)의 입양 한인 요리사 대니 보윈은 신인 요리사상(Rising Star Chef of the Year)을 거머쥐었다.
