Conference: Saturday April 22, 12–6 PM, at the New Museum Tickets, Day-of Livestream, and Original Content: SevenOnSeven.art
New York, NY… Rhizome and the New Museum are pleased to announce the ninth edition of the celebrated program Seven on Seven. This annual event brings together leaders of art and technology, challenging them to build new projects in creative collaboration. On Saturday, April 22, Rhizome will present Seven on Seven at the New Museum—the founding partner of the event and New York City's leading museum dedicated to contemporary art. Tickets to the event will go on sale on March 22, 2017.
On the occasion of the 2017 edition, Seven on Seven expands its digital footprint with SevenOnSeven.art, created in partnership with .ART, the first and only top-level domain name extension created specifically for the international art world. .ART is the premier partner of Seven on Seven 2017.
Seven on Seven 2017: Participants and Details Founded by Rhizome in 2010, Seven on Seven forefronts the leading issues at the intersection of culture and technology, and animates them through its novel format. Seven leading artists are paired with seven visionary technologists and asked to “make something”: an artwork, a prototype, a provocation—whatever they imagine. What they create in their short time together premieres at the conference, yet its effects ripple beyond that day. (Past creations and participants are outlined in the ABOUT SEVEN ON SEVEN section below.)
The 2017 edition features founders of international media organizations, corporate and civic leaders, artists blurring the lines between art and entrepreneurship, and creators pushing new technologies—from WeChat to artificial intelligence to the fabric of the web itself—to their furthest ends.
Seven on Seven 2017 will feature: Artist Jayson Musson & Jonah Peretti, Founder and CEO, Buzzfeed Artist collective and NEW INC resident DIS & Rachel Haot, Managing Director, 1776 Artist Bunny Rogers & Nozlee Samadzadeh, Engineer, Vox Artist Olia Lialina & Mike Tyka, artificial intelligence researcher at Google Artist Addie Wagenknecht & Cindy Gallop, Founder, MakeLoveNotPorn and IfWeRanTheWorld Artist Constant Dullaart & Chris Paik, Partner, Thrive Capital Artist Miao Ying & Mehdi Yahyanejad, Founder, Balatarin and Net Freedom Pioneers
Seven on Seven and .ART To narrate this unique program past and present, Rhizome has partnered with .ART to develop SevenOnSeven.art. This website will host the livestream of the 2017 edition as well as original editorial content and the entire program archive.
"The Seven on Seven program is entirely unique in the creative contact it forges between artists and technologists working at the highest levels of their fields," said Zachary Kaplan, Executive Director of Rhizome. "The talent involved in this year’s program is breathtaking. And I’m thrilled that .ART has empowered us to tell their art-tech story better than ever before."
“Within the New Museum’s long-established role in bridging art and technology, Rhizome's Seven on Seven is one of the clearest and most exciting examples of that exploration,” said Lisa Phillips, Toby Devan Lewis Director of the New Museum.
“We are delighted to partner with Rhizome and the New Museum for the 2017 edition of Seven on Seven, which is one of the most innovative and celebrated moments marrying art and technology on the art world calendar. To create and launch the website platform of record, SevenOnSeven.art, where past, present, and future collaborations by leaders of their industries will be showcased, is a tremendous privilege,” commented Ulvi Kasimov, Founder of .ART.
ABOUT SEVEN ON SEVEN & PAST HIGHLIGHTS The first Seven on Seven conference took place at the New Museum in April 2010, and featured teams including video artist Ryan Trecartin and Tumblr founder David Karp, who together created Riverthe.net, a dynamic video-sharing application that was later exhibited as part of the New Museum exhibition “Free.” The 2014 edition paired artist Kevin McCoy with technology leader Anil Dash, the founder of Monegraph, a blockchain-based provenance service that became a full-fledged start-up. The 2015 edition paired artist Ai Weiwei with security researcher Jacob Appelbaum; their collaboration was captured by filmmaker Laura Poitras (Citizenfour) for a short film that was premiered by the New York Times.
