올 5월 찰스 국왕의 대관식 때 지휘했던 존 엘리엇 가디너(John Eliot Gardiner, 80) 경이 22일 프랑스 남동부 라코테생탕드레에서 열린 베를리오즈 페스티벌에서 베이스 싱어 윌리엄 토마스(William Thomas, 29)의 얼굴을 주먹으로 때렸다. 이유는 토마스가 무대에 잘못 등장했다는 것. 이후 논란이 일자 사과했지만, 가디너는 9월 3일  BBC 음악축제 더 프롬스의 '트로이의 사람들(The Trojans)' 공연에서 사임했다고 영국 가디언지가 보도했다. 소식통에 따르면, 가디너는 공연 후 백스테이지에서 출연진이 축하하고 있는 동안 맥주잔을 들고 토마스에게 접근해 "이걸 너의 머리 위로 던지고 싶다"고 말했다. 목격자들에 따르면, 토마스는 그러지 말라고 경고했고, 이에 지휘자는 토마스의 얼굴과 입을 때렸다고 전했다.
