타임스퀘어 대형 전광판에 광고 대신 그림 한점 걸린다면, 무엇을 원하시나요?
세계 최대의 옥외 미술쇼 '아트 에브리웨어(Art Everywhere US)'가 찾아온다.
미국 내 빌보드, 버스 정류장, 디지털 전광판, 지하철 플랫폼에 미국 미술가들의 걸작을 공공 장소에 설치하는 'Art Everywhere US' 프로젝트가 8월 4일 타임스퀘어에서 시작되어 8월 31일까지 계속된다.
'아트 에브리웨어 US'는 미 5개 박물관의 큐레이터들이 소장품 중 추천한 100점의 후보작 중 대중의 인터넷 투표를 통해 58점의 인기작을 선정했다. 그 결과 존 싱글턴 코플리의 '와트슨과 상어'(1778)부터 신디 셔만의 '무제, 자화상'(2008)까지 최종 전시작 58점이 전시될 예정이다.
여성 미술가로는 마리 카삿(2점), 조지아 오키프(2점)와 사진작가 이모젠 커닝햄, 마거릿 부르크 화이트, 신디 셔먼(1점)이 뽑혔다.
존 싱거 사전트가 3점으로 가장 인기있었으며, 윈슬로우 호머, 존 싱글턴, 에드워드 호퍼, 재스퍼 존스, 윌렘 드 쿠닝, 로이 리히텐슈타인은 각각 2점씩 선정됐으나, 잭슨 폴락은 빠졌다.
후보작 추천에 참가한 뮤지엄은 휘트니뮤지엄(뉴욕), LA카운티뮤지엄, 내셔널 갤러리(워싱턴 DC), 시카고아트인스티튜트, 달라스뮤지엄 등 지역적으로 안배했다. 뉴욕현대미술관(MoMA)와 메트로폴리탄뮤지엄, 구겐하임 뮤지엄은 제외됐다.
