As part of Asia Week, join Michelle Yun, Asia Society Museum Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, and internationally recognized artist Lee Ufan for a conversation about his recent work. The artist will discuss his sculptural works in clay, created during a residency at the esteemed porcelain company Manufacture de Sèvres, and how this medium has allowed the artist to continue his explorations of space, time, and materiality.

Lee Ufan (b. 1936, Kyongsang-namdo, Korea) is best known as one of the founders of the avant-garde Mono-ha group that emerged in Japan in the late 1960s. Lee’s post-minimalist paintings, sculptures, and installations transcend western notions of representation to provide a nuanced dialogue between the visible and the invisible. Of his work, the artist has said: “The artworks I create are all tapestries of intimate breathing between me and the world. Therefore, seeing is not the confirmation of an object but a quiet concert of breathing between the work, the world, and the viewer.” Lee’s work has been part of numerous international solo and group exhibitions including at the Palace of Versailles, France (2014); Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2011); 54th Venice Biennale (2011); Samsung Museum of Modern Art, Seoul (2001); and Gwangju Biennale (2000). Lee’s most recent series of ceramics and clay sculptures will be on view at the Pace Gallery in celebration of Asia Week 2017.
