450 Park Avenue/Philips is proud to present works by New York artist SoHyun Bae in the lobby gallery from March 30  – July 6, 2018.  This is the third show the building has mounted as part of its new program of rotating exhibitions of contemporary art.

The works on view span over 15 years of SoHyun Bae’s career.  In some, she creates shapes using torn rice paper within fields of pigment, while in others form is described through the use of poured paint.  Drawing upon imagery from disparate sources such as Jewish mysticism, classical antiquity and traditional Korean arts, Bae’s paintings straddle abstraction and figuration.  The artist has said that she seeks silence in her work, and that it “is about making a gesture, a secret sign on the surface of the canvas, opening up possibilities…” To achieve this aim, she mixes an almost surreal sharp focus and detail with a more diffuse use of color.  The results are intensely emotional paintings with great visual impact that invite the viewer to join Bae in her explorations of the natural world and the history of art and ideas.

An evening reception and walkthrough of the exhibition led by the artist will be held on April 25th, from 5 – 7 PM and all are welcome.

SoHyun Bae holds an MFA from Boston University as well as an Masters of Theological Studies from Harvard University.  She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, as well as grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the New York Foundation for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
