유방암 초기 진단을 받은 여성들은 항암치료법으로 케모테라피(chemotherapy, 화학요법)를 받는다. 

그러나, 밴더빌트대학교의학센터의 연구결과에 따르면, 독성이 강한 케모테라피는 항암 효과가 없는 것으로 밝혀졌다고 뉴욕타임스가 보도했다. 

올해만 해도 미국내에서 유방암 진단을 받을 여성의 수는 26만명, 사망자는 4만1천명에 이를 것으로 예상된다. 2012년 세계에서 유방암 진단을 받은 여성 수는 170만명, 사망자 수는 50여만명에 이르렀다.
