The Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. is hosting its third annual OnStage Korea Open Call, inviting exceptional Korean and Korea-themed performing artists worldwide to showcase their talent in the Capital region during the program’s upcoming 2019 Season. Applications are due by Friday, September 7.
OnStage Korea’s first two seasons welcomed outstanding artist groups from across Korea, the United States, and the globe for a diverse series of free public performances in and around Washington, D.C., with more to come through the end of 2018. Past performances have featured the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company, D.C.’s own Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company, the modern opera From My Mother’s Mother, world music ensemble PAN Project, Korean contemporary music group Fairytale, the acclaimed SHIN Dance Company, and Korean theater troupe Goblin Party.
OnStage Korea strives to foster international cultural exchange by expanding the visibility of excellent Korean performing arts and artists in mainstream America. The 2019 Season will continue to present unique and exceptional performances throughout the year free to the public, in and around Washington, D.C.

Performance Season & Venues
A total of four performances are planned for this season. Venues will be determined based on the nature and size of the performances that are selected.
- 2019 Season: January – December, 2019
- Venues: Major performing arts centers in and around Washington, D.C.
Application Schedule
- Application Period: July 16 – September 7, 2018
- Application Deadline: Friday, September 7, 2018 at 5:00PM (EST)
- Final Selections and Notification of Results: Late October, 2018 (selected artists/groups will be contacted directly)
Eligible Performing Arts Categories/Genres
- Dance: modern, traditional, Korean, ballet, jazz, etc.
- Music: classical, opera, Korean traditional, jazz, vocal, world music, etc.
- Theater: musical, play, puppetry, mime, drama, etc.
- Other: traditional folk performance, non-verbal performance, other original works, etc.
Applicant Qualifications
There are no broad application restrictions based on nationality, age, or performance genre/type, however applicants must meet at least one of the following conditions:
- Be an individual artist, group, or non-profit arts organization that can present a live performance related to Korean culture or arts or a Korean cultural theme
- Be an individual artist, group, or non-profit arts organization for which at least one performer is Korean or Korean-American
Applicants should also note the following other terms and exceptions:
- Performance runtime should be between 50 and 90 minutes
- Artists applying for a single performance project or as a temporary/project-based group are eligible to apply (as well as established, regular artists and groups)
- Performances that aim to earn profit are not eligible
- Artists who were selected for participation in the 2017 or 2018 OnStage Korea seasons are not eligible to re-apply for 2019, and remain ineligible for a period of 2 years following their year of participation
Support Provided
- Performance venue (for a one-time event)
- Stage technical production (sound, lighting, stage crew, etc.)
- Nominal artist fees (dependent on selection placement)
- Local transportation (between the airport, hotel, venue, and KCC, as needed)
- Artist insurance (as required by the venue)
- Promotional (posters, postcards, brochure, photos, video, online, social media, etc.)
※The Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. does not provide for or cover the following potential expenses: airfare, accommodations, daily living expenses, meals, per diem allowance, additional rehearsal space rental fees, application fees and/or materials, travel visas, or other related expenses not listed above under Support Provided.
Evaluation of Applications
Applications will be evaluated by a panel of performing arts professionals and experts based on criteria from the Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C., including consideration of the contents of each application and any supporting materials submitted.
How to Apply
Application Forms
Please complete both application forms at the links below (one English & one Korean). The content of the English and Korean forms are the same, except for the language, and applicants are asked to complete EACH form once, in the respective language (links and files may be the same in each form, and do not need to be different or language-specific).
Additional Materials/Supporting Documents
Supporting documents and additional materials such as performer resumes, photos, past performance recordings, etc. are optional, but applicants are encouraged to provide them if possible.
※ Smaller files (less than 1 MB) can be uploaded directly in the form when you complete your applications (because applicants must complete the both the English and Korean forms, files only need to be uploaded in one form). Large format media (such as video/audio recordings) should be uploaded to a website of your choice and links can be entered when completing the online application form. If any other supporting documents cannot be uploaded in the online form due to size (not including video/audio), please send them as an attachment in an email to 2019onstagekorea@gmail.com using the subject line '2019 OnStage Korea Application / [Artist Name]'.
※Any documents and materials submitted as part of an application will not be returned. Applicants may be disqualified at any point if any information in their application is found to be false, misleading, or incorrect, or if terms of this guideline document are not adhered to.
