민화 화폭에 그려진 도상들은 특정 뜻을 지닌 상징성이 있어서 글을 쓰듯 화재를 구성하여 읽는 그림이라 말하기도 한다.
모란꽃을 그리면 부귀영화를 뜻하고 연꽃은 다산을 의미해서 옛 여인들의 옷감에 수 놓이기도 했으며 연꽃과 함께 그려지는 도상에 따라 새롭게 읽혀져 의미하는 바가 달라지기도 한다.
A와 B가 합해지면 특정 의미를 갖게 되는 독특한 공식의 그림인 것이다.
나는 이런 공식이 흥미롭다.
공식에 충실한 민화는 의미 전달이 용이하다. 그러나 도상의 형태가 국한되어 모사로 오인받아 회화적 작품성을 인정 받지 못 할 수 있는것이 단점이다.
독특한 공식이 매럭이지만 그 매력이 독이 되는 현상이 다른 무언가를 찾게 되는 결핍에 빠지게 한다. 이러한 결핍속에서 조형되어진 기형적 공식이 나만의 표현이 된다.
원형의 민화를 분해하거나 새로 조합해서 비밀스런 의미를 풀어내서 조형하는 것이 민화를 그리는 나의 놀이이다. 이 놀이를 위해 호랑이의 뒤에서 그 눈을 빌어 엉뚱한 상상들을 표현하는 것이 나만의 공식이 됐다.
원형의 민화가 지닌 의미를 나의 해석으로 표현하기위해 관념적 조형이 아닌 직관적 시각을 즐긴다.
도상의 의미를 알고 있어야 읽어내는 것이 아닌 마음에 떠오르는 의미가 통할 수 있는 민화,
마음이 보고 붓이 가는데로 펼쳐 놓는것이 나의 민화적 공식이다.
나는 민화를 그린다. 지금의 눈으로 읽어 낼 수 있는 민화를 그리는 것이 나의 소명이길 바란다.

There are many symbolisms in Korean traditional folk paintings. You can see that this is a traditional painting when you understand the many symbolisms in it. For example, drawing peony blossoms means living in wealth and honor. Drawing a lotus symbolizes fertility. In South Korea many years ago, the elderly women embroidered lotus flowers on their traditional clothes called "hanbok". The meaning of the painting could change when artists drew lotus flowers with other symbolic subjects. Therefore, combining A and B could create new meaning in the painting. These are very special meanings for my art work. I am very interested in the formula.It is easy to convey the meaning when artists follow the pattern. But because these symbols are not always recognized, many people do not understand the high quality of the traditional paintings because of the similarities of character and patterns. They see the paintings as being too much the same. I like to follow the patterns, but I feel that I need to find new and creative ideas for my special art work. I want to express a unique formula to create new meaning in my painting. I really want to break the rule of formed modeling of traditional folk painting through my different point of view.I dismantled the traditional folk drawing, " MinHwa" and redesigned it to add a new secret meaning for my art work within my art playground. This formula became my drawing style to express fantastic ideas. For example, I tried to express new meaning behind the tiger's eyes in this piece of my art work. I enjoy an intuitive view to represent new interpretation through Korean folk painting-not ideological subjects. People do not need to necessarily understand the meaning of traditional folk painting. They just enjoy viewing my art and creating their own feelings to connet to my work. In my fomula, I see what I want in my mind and follow my brush to draw with my warm heart. I am drawing the Korean traditional painting "MinHwa" in my country of South Korea. My hope is that I could draw it as a calling for my life forever.
수복도
글자 위에 그림을 더하여 표현한 것이 특징인 문자도를 호랑이 그림위에 역으로 올려 글자를 문양으로써 표현해 본다.
그림의 일부분으로 글자를 표현하여 장식적 글자가 아닌 그림으로써의 문자 표현이라 하겠다.
효제문자도
효제문자도가 갖는 기본 도상을 탈피하여 용호도를 바탕으로 전하고자 하는 의미를 재설정 해본다.
효제문자도가 의미하는 바를 마음에 새겨 인간적 삶의 기본 자세를 가저야한다는 개념을 표현하기 위해 글자 중 한 획을 하트로 그렸다.
호랑이는 땅을 의미하고 용은 하늘을 의미하니 하늘과 땅사이에 살아가는 사람으로써 갖추어야 할 삶의 자세를 이야기 하고자 한다.
하트는 사람의 마음을 비유한것으로 문자도가 의미하는 바를 가슴에 새기길 바래본다.

Subokdo- Is a special character used in Korean traditional folk painting, it is used to represent Chinese letters. I would like to express Chinese letters called Moonjado, as inverse patterns on my tiger's painting. It is not only for decorative purposes, but instead serves as an expression of letters that represent Chinese characters, as seen in my drawing.
Hyojemoonjado- I redesigned Hyojemoonjado which escapes from basic meanings, it is based off of Younghodo. Hyojemoonjado means we should have a basic attitude of human life. I keep these words in my mind as I created my painting, I drew a heart with linear strokes to express this fundamental concept. In my painting, the tiger symbolizes land, and the dragon symbolizes the sky. I believe we need to have a positive attitude in our lives, and become good human beings that live between the sky and this land. I compare the heart to a human's mind; I hope people keep these words in their mind when they view my artwork (Moonjado).

Je- means “taking good care of one's siblings.”
Chung-means “taking good care of one's country.”
Sin- means “taking good care of one's faith.”
Ye- means “taking good care of one's etiquette.” Ui- means “taking care of one's justice.”
Yeom- means “taking good care of one's self-control.”
Chi- means “taking care of one's sense of shame.”
