구글 아트앤컬처 첫 디지털 뮤지엄은 베르메르

손바닥 안의 뮤지엄. 이젠 여행을 가지 않고도 명작을 스마트폰으로 디테일하게 감상할 수 있게 됐다.

구글 아트앤컬처(Google Art & Culture)가 3일 네덜란드 화가 요하네스 베르메르(Johannes Vermeer, 1632–1675)의 작품 36점을 모은 디지털 뮤지엄 앱을 개관했다.  '진주 귀고리를 단 소녀'를 소장한 네덜란드 미술관 마우리츠하우스(Mauritshuis)와 합작으로 기획한 뮤지엄의 이름은 '베르메르를 만나라(Meet Vermeer)'로 세계 7개국, 18개 뮤지엄에 흩어진 베르베르의 작품 36점을 한눈에 볼 수 있다.

베르메르는 43년 생애에 겨우 45점을 그렸으며, 남아있는 작품이 36점(논쟁작 제외)에 불과하다. '북구의 모나리자'로 불리우는 '진주 귀고리를 단 소녀' 등 17세기 네덜란드 가정의 사람들과 일상생활을 고요하게 묘사한 베르메르는 컬트적인 인기를 누려왔다. 하지만, 베르메르 특별전에 모든 작품이 모이기는 거의 불가능하다. 손상 우려로 대여가 금지된 작품도 있지만, 보스턴 이사벨라 스튜어트 가드너 뮤지엄 소장품은 1990년 도난당했기 때문이다.  

베르메르의 전작을 모으는 것은 디지털이기에 가능하다. 뉴욕에선 메트로폴리탄뮤지엄이 5점, 프릭컬렉션에 3점의 베르메르를 소장하고 있으며, 워싱턴 DC의 내셔널갤러리와 암스테르담의 라이크스뮤지엄은 4점, 루브르뮤지엄은 2점이다. 그외에 세계 곳곳 뮤지엄과 개인 소장가들이 협력해서 하이레졸루션 이미지로 인터넷 뮤지엄을 오픈하게된 것.

앱을 오픈하면, 문과 천장이 없는 뮤지엄을 가상현실로 브라우징할 수 있다. 베르메르 회화를 주제별(추파 던지기, 집중, 이야기, 편지, 음악, 도시, 상징, 진주, 지도, 그림 속 그림 등)로 감상하는 섹션에서 '베르메르에 대해 당신이 모르는 것 12가지' 등 칼럼, 대중 문화 속의 베르메르 등 섹션으로 분류했다. 고화질로 재생된 작품을 줌인, 줌아웃 기능으로 다른 앵글로, 디테일하게 감상할 수 있으며, 감상 포인트 해설 캡션이 떠서 작품을 더 깊이 이해할 수 있다.

구글 아트&컬처는 구글이 세계 70개국의 1200개 미술관, 갤러리, 협회와 협력해 고화질로 소장품 이미지를 소개하는 플랫폼이다. 네티즌은 가상현실로 미술관 투어를 할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 자신의 컬렉션을 구축하고, 아트 셀피, 공유, 번역 기능도 보유하고 있다. 포켓 속의 베르메르, 언제든지 만난다. 컴퓨터로 보면 더 큰 사이즈로 감상이 가능하다. https://artsandculture.google.com
