New Wave of Comedy, 1969-1979
FOUR WEEK, 56-FILM FESTIVAL INCLUDING FILMS BY JOHN LANDIS, ALBERT BROOKS, JOHN WATERS, GEORGE
LUCAS, BRIAN DE PALMA, ROBERT DOWNEY, MEL BROOKS, WOODY ALLEN, MELVIN VAN PEEBLES, ROBERT ALTMAN, ROBERT BENTON, LINA WERTMÜLLER, HAL ASHBY, MILOS FORMAN, MANY OTHERS AND 7-FILM TRIBUTE TO ELAINE MAY AT FILM FORUM JANUARY 18 – FEBRUARY 14 (FOUR WEEKS) A four-week, 56-film festival of the
boundary-pushing comedies of the 1970s, will run at Film Forum from Friday,
January 18 through Thursday,
February 14. The festival will also
include a 7-film tribute to actress and director Elaine May. Hollywood entered the 1970s in
disarray, with the major studios struggling financially and artistically. The
industry reached a pivotal turning point when censorship of language, adult
content and violence loosened up. This allowed for a new generation of
filmmakers, writers, actors and comedians to create films that reflected
America’s cultural revolution that started in the 1960s. Comedy became bold and
rebellious in the 70s, exploring such once-taboo subject matter as race,
sexuality, religion, drug use, death, and complex human relationships. Some of the best comedies of the 70s
were made on small budgets by up-and-coming directors, including Albert Brooks, George Lucas, Woody
Allen, Peter Bogdanovich, John Waters, Allan Arkush, Joe Dante, Brian de Palma
and Paul Mazursky, with many fresh faces
of the era – including Jeff Bridges, Diane Keaton, Elliot Gould, Goldie Hawn,
Madeline Kahn, John Belushi, and Robert De Niro – soon becoming the Hollywood
elite. Special events include… - Q&A with director Dean Hargrove, following
a screening of his long-unseen cult spoof Noir The Manchu Eagle Murder Caper
Mystery, starring Gabriel
Dell (ex-Dead End Kid), Barbara Harris, Vincent Gardenia, Jackie Coogan, and Huntz
Hll. Hargrove, a writer for The Man From U.N.C.L.E. when still in
his 20s and producer of such hit TV shows as
Columbo and Matlock, will be
interviewed by Film Forum Repertory Director Bruce Goldstein following the
screening. Manchu Eagle has not been screened in NYC for nearly 45 years. - Paul Mazursky’s Harry and Tonto, starring Art Carney in Oscar-winning
role, introduced by Goldstein - Arthur Hiller’sThe In-Laws, followed by Q&A with screenwriter
(later Director) Andrew Bergman, moderated
by Goldstein. Elaine
May began performing as a child in her
father’s traveling Yiddish theater company. After moving to Chicago in 1950,
she met actor Mike Nichols; they’d soon form the innovative comedy duo Nichols
and May. After the act broke up in the early 60s, May would go on
to act, write, and direct for live theatre and movies. She made her directorial
debut with the critically-acclaimed A New
Life, also co-starring as a nerdish botanist opposite Walter Matthau. Her second film as director, The Heartbreak Kid, starring Charles
Grodin, Cybill Shepard and May’s daughter Jeannie Berlin, was included on the
AFI’s top 100 comedies list. May received an Oscar
nomination for her Heaven Can Wait screenplay
and reunited with Nichols to write The
Birdcage, adapted from the French comedy
La Cage aux Folles (also included in the 70s festival). Earlier this year,
at age 85, May returned to Broadway after 60 years to star in Kenneth
Lonergan’s The Waverly Gallery. “FAR OUT IN THE 1970S” has been programmed by Bruce Goldstein, with Elspeth Carroll For complete
