2019년은 3.1운동 및 대한민국 임시정부 수립 100주년 기념 해입니다. 3.1운동 100주년을 맞이해서 한국어 스토리타임에서는 특별한 시간을 준비했습니다.
이번 스페셜 한국어 스토리타임 시간에는 일본의 침략으로부터 조선을 지켜낸 이순신과 거북선의 실제 이야기를 바탕으로 만든 동화책 ‘The Turtle Ship’의 일러스트 작가 콜린(Colleen Kong-Savage)을 초대하여 동화책의 주요 부분을 읽어줄 예정입니다. 또한, 이순신 장군이 치뤘던 전쟁 중 유명한 전쟁이였던 ‘명량해전’, 거북선 그리고 판옥선(조선후기 수군의 주력함) 등 한국의 역사적인 이야기도 아이들에게 들려줍니다.
콜린은 ‘The Turtle Ship’ 책의 모든 그림을 꼴라쥬로 표현을 했습니다. 이런 그녀의 경험을 바탕으로 이번 워크샵에서는 한국의 전통종이인 한지를 사용하여 거북선을 꼴라주로 만들어 보는 시간을 가집니다.
한국과 한국어를 몰라도 누구나 쉽게 참여 할 수 있는 한국어 스토리타임_역사편에 많은 관심과 참여 바랍니다.
*한국어 스토리타임_역사편은 4살~10살 아이들의 참여를 권장합니다. 또한, 장소 수용인원이 한정되어 있어서 선착순 입장으로 진행이 됩니다. 수용인원이 초과시에는 입장을 못 할 수도 있음을 알려드립니다.

KCCNY and the New York Public Library: St. Agnes Branch co-present this Korean Storytime Special Event.
Join us for a special program of Korean Storytime as we explore the art of collage with Colleen Kong-Savage, illustrator of The Turtle Ship. The delightful tale loosely based on the true story of Admiral Yi Sun-Sin and his Turtle Ship is a great way for young readers to be introduced to Korean history incorporated with moral lessons, along with a fun hands-on learning experience!
Colleen will read highlight portions of The Turtle Ship, and also share about the great Admiral Yi and his famous battleship, the Geobukseon (literally, “the turtle ship”) which was used alongside other warships like the Panokseon (“board roofed” ship) in 16th century Korea. Afterwards, children will get to make their own collage turtle ships out of hanji, beautiful traditional Korean handmade paper made of mulberry.
Knowledge of Korean is not required; families welcome! Recommended for Ages 4-10.
Space is limited and provided on a first come, first served basis.

My name is Colleen Kong-Savage. Yes, as in King Kong was a Savage beast. What am I up to these days?
Once upon a time I was intimidated by the big bad city of New York. But what a thrill to live on an island of a thousand cultures! Growing up, I hopscotched about the globe with my family. When I returned to the US, I missed all the foods and people I had encountered in the Philippines, Zambia, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia… until I moved to the Big Apple. As I earned my writing MFA at Columbia University, I fell in love with the metropolis, its growly sense of humor and population of creative oddballs. Because of a phobia of driving, I will never leave it.
This June 2018 I made my children’s book illustration debut with Helena Rhee‘s The Turtle Ship, published by Lee & Low Books (woohoo!).
