평화의 시대, 평화로운 땅. 에피소드 4: 예술을 통하여 지속되는 평화

코리아아트포럼(KAF)은 4월 4일부터 5월 2일까지 첼시의 오자노 아트 스페이스에서 그룹전 <평화의 시대, 평화로운 땅. 에피소드 4: 예술을 통하여 지속되는 평화>를 연다.
이 전시는 조선민주주의인민공화국에서 생산된 잡지와 포스터를 소개하면서 동시에 뉴욕과 한국, 그리고 중국 동시대미술 작가들의 작품을 선보인다.

본 전시는 코리아아트포럼 설립 이념 중의 하나인 평화개념을 연구주제로 삼는다. KAF는 평화를 전쟁(열전)의 부재가 아니라, 타인과 상호교류하고 그들의 가치와 관점을 이해하는 생생한 과정으로 파악한다. 이 전시는 그런 평화의 개념을 구체적으로 실현하는 노력의 연장 선상에서 구성되었다.
지난 2018년 11월에 알리시아 그룰론, 여경섭, 우가종과 장치이, 유쥬쥬, 전종철, 치위티엔은 해상의 DMZ라고 말할 수 있는 NLL 근처의 서해 5도에 초청되었다. 작가들은 그 섬들의 곳곳에설치된 무장과 긴장감이 공기에 떠도는 일상을 관찰하고, 그 관찰 결과를 기초로 삼아 새로운 작품을 창조했다. 그룰론과 전 작가는 간단한 리플릿을 디자인하였다. 유 작가는 해변가에서
주운 어망을 이용하여 설치작업을 구현했다. 중국의 치 작가는 북경의 흙으로 제작한 조그만 조각을 대청도 땅에 묻는 퍼포먼스를 수행하였고, 우와 장은 대청도 해변가에서 오체투지와 유사하게 온 몸을 엎드리는 절을 70배 하여 70년간 지속되어온 경계선을 그리는 퍼포먼스를 실행했다.
여 작가는 관객들에게 평화의 메시지를 쓰도록 요청하고 그 메시지를 풍선에 달아 날리는 방식으로 관객과 직접적인 교류를 추진하였다. 전시는 한반도 분단을 문화와 예술의 관점에서 해석하려는 커미션을 통하여 제작된 새로운 작품들과 퍼포먼스 기록물을 선보인다. 그 외에도 베타니 판처가 본인의 아버지 존 판처의 유물에서 발견한 필름을 디지털로 전환한 영상물이 전시된다. 그가 1952-53 한국전 참전 때 촬영한 이 희귀한 필름은 이번 전시를 통하여 최초로 발표되고 당시 한국의 일상을 엿볼 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 이가경 작가는 프린트를 쉬로 작가는 수채화를 발표하는데, 그들의 작품은 한반도의 분단에 대한 부가적인 코멘트를 제시함으로써 전시를 더더욱 풍요롭게 한다.
<평화의 시대, 평화로운 땅. 에피소드 4: 예술을 통하여 지속되는 평화> 전시는 시각예술 매체의 다양성을 제시하여 관객에게 박력감 있게 변화하는 시각경험을 할 수 있는 기회를 제공하고, 전통과 현대, 사회주의와 자본주의 미학을 통합하는 공동체로서의 동시대미술 틀에 대한 질문을 촉발시킬 것을 기대한다.
전시는 앞서 언급한 평화의 개념을 행동으로 실천하여 소통하고자는 노력의 일환이다. 또한 한반도 갈등을 정치나 군사, 경제 등 지정학적인 관점이 아닌 예술과 철학적 관점에서 새롭게 이해하는 길을 개척하고 동시대미술에 대한 기존의 관념을 재고해보는 기회를 제공할 것으로 보인다.
뉴욕에서 발표되지 않은 작업들을 대중에게 소개하는 전시와 대화는 미술 전문인과 일반 관객에게 동시대미술을 새롭게 지각할 수 있는 입지들을 제공한다. 여기서 이념적, 지형적, 시간적 경계를 초월하여 근본적으로 다른 작품들이 공존하고 이종문화간의 접점이 창조된다.
KAF 전시 시리즈는 뉴욕시 문화부가 시위원회와 협력하여 제공하는 보조금 선정사업으로 실행되고 오자누스 예술공간과 공동으로 주최된다. 2018년 커미션 활동은 인천광역시, (재)인천문화재단, 한국문화예술위원회 지역협력형사업으로 선정되어 실현되었다.
오자누스 예술공간은 작가가 자선활동의 일환으로 운영하는 전시/프로젝트 공간으로 니키쉬로와 프레드릭 오자누스가 2009년에 창립했다. 그 공간은 두 사람의 주위에 있는 작가들과 큐레이터들이 기획하는 동시대미술 전시를 유치한다. 그 공간의 전시는 소외된 인종그룹의 작가나 국제교류 작가들을 조명한다. 갤러리는 뉴욕시 갤러리 지역의 중심부인 첼시에 있는 회계사 사무소 뒷 편에 자리를 잡고 있다. www.ozaneauxartspace.blogspot.com

Korea Art Forum is pleased to kick off the 2019 KAF FORUMS series with RESISTANCE vs. CONTRADICTION featuring two artist activists Alicia Grullon and Dr. Gregory Sholette. In view of the widespread misreading of political art, interlocutors Alicia Grullon and Gregory Sholette will explore notions of political art based on their own experiences of organizing or supporting resistance movements. The term “political art” does not restrict art to political causes or struggles, but explicates the coupler that all arts are political (and ultimately promoting a particular ideological point of view by extension). Clarifying what are the questions to be chosen for further examination in Art (which is political by nature), the interlocutors will also critically inquire the widespread idea of art as always contradicting conventional terms (to invent new terms of art?). The evening will end with Grullon’s brief report of her recent research trip to Korean islands near the Northern Limited Line, the maritime borderline between North and South Korea.
Alicia Grullón, a 2018-2019 Hemi Artist in Residence, directs her interdisciplinary practice towards critiques of the politics of presence, arguing for the inclusion of disenfranchised communities in political and social spheres. She is co-organizer and co-author of the People’s Cultural Plan, a coalition of artists, cultural workers, and activists responding to New York City’s first ever cultural plan in 2017. Her work has been shown at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, El Museo del Barrio, Columbia
University’s Wallach Art Gallery, BRIC Arts, Spring/Break Art Show, and Performa 11, among others. Grullón is also a contributing author to Rhetoric, Social Value and the Arts: But How Does it Work?, ed. Nicola Mann and Charlotte Bonham-Carter (Palgrave Macmillan, London). Recent activities include the Shandaken Project inaugural artist residency on Governors Island and the Bronx Museum of the Arts AIM Alum program at 80 White Street. Grullón is an adjunct professor at The School of Visual Arts and City University of New York (CUNY).
Artist, activist, and writer Dr. Gregory Sholette, is curator of the mobile project Imaginary Archive: that documents a past whose future never arrived, and author of Delirium and Resistance: Activist Art and the Crisis of Capitalism (2017), Art As Social Action withChloë Bass (2018), and Dark Matter (2010). Sholette is a founding member of Political Art Documentation/Distribution (1989-1988); REPOhistory (1989-2000); and Gulf Labor Coalition (2010-ongoing), and attended the Whitney Independent Studies Program; UC San Diego (MFA); Cooper Union (BFA), and the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands (PhD). He is a Professor at Queens College, CUNY co-directing the Social Practice art program.

OZANEAUX ArtSpace is a philanthropic, artist-run exhibition/project space created by Nikki Schiro and Frederic Ozaneaux in 2009. It hosts Contemporary Art exhibitions for Artists and Curators in the couple's community. The exhibitions highlight Artists from underrepresented demographics as well as foreign exchange.
