October 16, 2019

Susanna Mälkki will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct Unsuk Chin’s Šu, for Sheng and Orchestra, with Wu Wei as soloist in his New York debut; Haydn’s Symphony No. 22, Philosopher; and R. Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra, on Friday, October 18, 2019, at 8:00 p.m.; Saturday, October 19 at 8:00 p.m.; and Tuesday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m.

A champion of the sheng, an ancient Chinese mouth organ, Wu Wei has been the soloist for all 44 presentations of Korean-born composer Unsuk Chin’s Šu, for Sheng and Orchestra, since its 2009 world premiere. He was also the soloist in the 2014 Deutsche Grammophon recording of the work. The Guardian wrote that it’s Mr. Wu’s “extraordinary virtuosity that allows [Unsuk Chin] to create such original textures.” Both Mr. Wu and Ms. Chin emigrated to Germany as students and are now based in Berlin.

Unsuk Chin was awarded The Marie-Josée Kravis Prize for New Music at the New York Philharmonic in 2018. She is also one of 19 women composers whom the Philharmonic has commissioned as part of Project 19, marking the centennial of the 19th Amendment; her commissioned work will be premiered in a future season. The Orchestra performed the US Premieres of her Clarinet Concerto, a Philharmonic co-commission, in 2014 and Gougalōn: Scenes from a Street Theater, named one of New York magazine’s “10 Best Classical Performances of the Year,” in 2013.

Susanna Mälkki conducted the Swedish and Portuguese premieres of Šu with Mr. Wu as soloist in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Ms. Mälkki made her acclaimed New York Philharmonic debut in 2015 and returned in 2018. The New York Times described her debut performances as “probing, audacious … ebullient and imaginative.”

The Insights at the Atrium event “Yearning for a Distant Sound: Šu for Sheng and Orchestra” will take place Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center. Sheng player Wu Wei and composer Unsuk Chin will discuss Ms. Chin’s Šu, which has become one of Mr. Wu’s signature works.
