햄버거 체인 셰이크 섁(Shake Shack)이 코로나19로 인한 연방정부의 스몰 비지니스 PPP(월급보호프로그램)으로부터 1천만 달러의 론을 받는다고 eater.com이 보도했다. 셰이크 섁은 전국에 6천만명의 직원을 두고 있는 거대 체인이다. PPP는 500명 이하 회사에 적용된다.
셰이크섁은 2020년 3월 판매가 전년 대비 28.5% 감소했다. 셰이크 섁은 미국내 280개, 해외엔 95개 두고 있다. 2019년 판매액은 5억7천만 달러에 달했다. 셰이크 섁은 유니온스퀘어카페, 그래머시태번 등을 소유한 대니 마이어(Danny Meyer)는 지난 3월 중순 계열사 직원 2천여명을 해고한 바 있다.
한편, 미드타운의 루스 크리스 스테이크하우스(Ruth's Chris Steakhouse)은 2천만 달러, 샌드위치 체인 포트벨리(Potbelly)도 1천만 달러를 받은 것으로 알려졌다. 이에 따라 연방정부의 PPP 프로그램의 기금 3조500억 달러는 2주만에 바닥이 났다.
