시카고의 한인 여고생이 김남주 시인의 광주항쟁에 관한 시 '학살2'를 표절한 작품 'May 1980'으로 교내 문학상을 수상한 것으로 알려져 온라인 커뮤니티에서 논란이 되고 있다.

Adlai E. Stevenson High School에 재학 중인 케이티 리(Katie Lee)는 2018년 교내 잡지 'The Wit'가 주최하는 문학상에서 김남주(1946-1994 ) 시인의 '학살 2'의 영문 번역 'Massacre, Part II'를 창작시 'May 1980'으로 출품해 1등상을 받은 것으로 전해졌다. 

이 영문 시는 고 송재평 교수(메리그로브대)의 웹사이트 'Korean Poetry in Translation'에 오른 'Massacre, Part II by Kim Nam-ju'를 그대로 베낀 것으로 드러났다. 이 사실은 미국에 거주하는 한 학부형이 미씨USA 웹사이트에 제보하면서 알려졌다.

UW-Whitewater's 2018 Creative Writing Festival proved a success for Witsters and creative writing students alike:

Seniors Emily Luo and Johnna Geick received 1st and 2nd places in the personal essay category for "Holy Water" and "The Will of the Wind," while senior Winston Wang (better known as Isabella Stock) won 1st in short fiction for "Over the Woodchips." In poetry, sophomore Katie Lee took home the 1st place with "May 1980," junior Anna Wang won 2nd with "Kaleidoscope of Alzheimer's, or Grandfather from Three Perspectives," and junior Helen Han received 3rd for "Wildlife," "Stupor," and "Lull." Sophomores Maddie Mitchell and Katie Wu tied for Honorable Mention for their poems "why i was absent on october 5th" and "In a Bamboo Forest."
