홈리스에게 대학 진학 기회를 지원하는 비영리재단 RDJ Refuge Shelter를 운영하는 에다페 옥포로(Edafe Okporo)와 시엘로 빌라(Cielo Villa)를 비롯, 브루클린 Strong Children Wellness의 창립자인 소아과의사 수젯 브라운(Dr. Suzette Brown), New Immigrant Community Empowerment의 대표 마누엘 카스트로(Manuel Castro), 그리고 Compost Power의 도밍고 모랄레스(Domingo Morales)가 제 1회 수상자로 선정됐다. 상금은 각 20만 달러씩, 총 100만 달러다. 데이빗상은 제드 왈렌타스의 아버지 이름에서 따왔다.
