APRIL 2 IN-THEATER OPENINGS
Pedro Almodóvar’s First English Film, THE HUMAN VOICE,
Starring Tilda Swinton Presented with Almodóvar’s WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN Opening Friday, April 2 THEATRICAL TICKETING ONLY – not available in Virtual Cinema An elegant wraithlike woman (the inimitable Tilda Swinton), a fidgety dog, a chicly furnished apartment, an ax. In his short film THE HUMAN VOICE – based freely on the stage play by Jean Cocteau – master auteur Pedro Almodóvar takes a minimalist concept (“a text and an actress”) and experiments like never before. Working for the first time in English and in short form, while hybridizing elements of cinema and theater via a stunning “fourth wall” set design, Almodóvar distills the intense despair of eros in crisis: desire unrequited and a modern woman facing the abyss of abandonment. In a taut, tour-de-force performance, Swinton brings this woman to life—nerves frayed, pining and unhinged, yet not devoid of self-respect. The human voice is hers alone, one side of a final phone conversation with her lover who, three days gone, has yet to retrieve his belongings. In the director’s own words, this brief masterpiece is about “the disorientation and distress” of grief. At the same time, it is an exhilarating assertion of life and beauty.
Playing with WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN, Almodóvar’s multiple award-winning, cult-classic black comedy (based on the same Cocteau play and starring Carmen Maura and Antonio Banderas). “Tilda Swinton, celebrated, adored and stalked by the camera in a 30-minute dramaturgical, couture-driven, production-designed emotional crack-up, is pure cinematic enjoyment.” THE HUMAN VOICE (2020, 30 minutes) Written & Directed by Pedro Almodóvar. Freely based on Jean Cocteau’s play. USA / Spain. In English. A Sony Pictures Classics release.
WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN (1988, 89 minutes) Written & Directed by Pedro Almodóvar. Spain. In Spanish with English subtitles. Rated R. A Sony Pictures Classics release. THE TRUFFLE HUNTERS Opening Friday, April 2 THEATRICAL TICKETING ONLY – not available in Virtual Cinema Deep in the forests of Piedmont, Italy, a handful of men, seventy or eighty years young, hunt for the rare and expensive white Alba truffle—which to date has resisted all of modern science’s efforts at cultivation. They’re guided by a secret culture and training passed down through generations, as well as by the noses of their cherished and expertly trained dogs. They live a simpler, slower way of life, in harmony with their loyal animals and their picture-perfect land, seemingly straight out of a fairy tale. They’re untethered to cell phone screens or the Internet, opting instead to make their food and drink by hand and prioritizing in-person connections and community. The demand for white truffles increases year after year, even as the supply decreases. As a result of climate change, deforestation, and the lack of young people taking up the mantle, the truffle hunters’ secrets are more coveted than ever. However, as it soon becomes clear, these ageing men may just hold something much more valuable than even this prized delicacy: the secret to a rich and meaningful life. The film played at the 2020 Sundance, Cannes, Toronto & New York Film Festivals, among many others.
“The cast of characters is like something out of an absurdist comedy. The film also is striking for its visual poetry and the painterly quality of its images… (with) compositions both simple and beautiful. A fascinating glimpse inside a world of arcane knowledge and the luxury market that feeds off it. It’s foodie heaven.” THE TRUFFLE HUNTERS (2020, 84 minutes) Directed by Michael Dweck & Gregory Kershaw. Italy / USA / Greece. In Italian and Piedmontese with English subtitles. Rated PG-13. A Sony Pictures Classics release
Federico Fellini’s LA STRADA (1954) New 4K Restoration Opening Friday, April 2 THEATRICAL TICKETING ONLY – not available in Virtual Cinema Bought from her parents to assist the act of Anthony Quinn’s brutish strongman “Zampanò,” Giullieta Masina’s simple-minded peasant girl Gelsomina is taught a haunting tune by a dreamy aerialist (American actor Richard Basehart) and assured that she too has a place in the world. An enormous international success and personal triumph for Masina, La Strada was awarded the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film of its year. LA STRADA has been restored in 4K by the Criterion Collection and The Film Foundation at Cineteca di Bologna’s L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, from a 35mm dupe negative preserved by Beta Film GmbH. Restoration funding provided by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
“Transported neorealism to a new place… Masina all but patented the adjective ‘Chaplinesque’ with her repertoire of pantomimed wonder.”
